Can you boil a growler like you would a beaker?

I would think probably not, but has anyone done this? I have a flat-top electric stove- does that make a difference?

Bad idea. Unless you like glass shrapnel.
 
The best answer is do not try it, it's not worth the risk. Nothing good would come of it.
 
I've poured starter wort that was just boiling into a growler that had been heated up with hot tap water on the outside. Then placed it into an ice bath to chill before pitching.

Definitely wouldn't boil in one though.

You're courting disaster doing that. The glass in those growlers is not made to do that.
