Just got two Wyeast 1056 smack packs in the mail, bloated. I'm brewing today, but I wasn't planning on using these two packs, but rather use US-05. Can I open the packs, make a "starter" (won't be getting much time to rev up) and pitch it, or should I just forget about them and use the Safale?

Edit: They seem too bloated to be able to smack them.

If you're not planning on using them for this brew you can just toss them in the fridge. Those packs can sometimes swell without the nutrient pack being ruptured. Should be no issue. Just go ahead and make a starter like you normally would prior to the brew day you plan to use them for. You don't have to smack the packs, it's just a way to show viability. Get your brew on! :rockin:

Tossed both in the fridge and used them for a brew 10 days later. Everything started up perfectly. :)
