adding herbs to a brew?

Has anyone had any experience brewing with herbs?
I am a noob and only have the time and money for extract kits. A family friend has a farm where I have unlimited access to herbs and want to brew something for them for a party.
Any tips or suggestions? I was thinking basil or mint might be a good addition, but not sure how or when to add it?

Have you had Saison du BUFF (Dogfish/Stone/Victory collaboration)? It is a pretty good herb beer, and uses sage, parsley, rosemary, and thyme. I have been meaning to brew this:
