my pa just got about 5 or 6 beer kits, that have best before dates in 2008, now i know the yeast would be dead but do you think the beer would be drinkable, i mean they were free but would it be worth making them? (they are geordie and coopers bitter kits btw)

They'll make beer. The liquid extract has probably gone stale by now and will impact the beer.
As long as the cans are still well sealed,they'd be ok to use. But darker & a lil different tasting. not bad...just different. As long as thye don't hiss when you open them,they'll be ok.
