Any Suggestions on a hydrometer?

Hi Everyone,

I'm a noob, and am easing away from the Mr. Beer kit. With that being said, I am looking for an inexpensive (but quality) hydrometer. any suggestions?

Check in with any reputable local homebrew store or on line homebrew store...they all carry pretty much the same items for generally the same price...glass, triple scale.

When you get that hydrometer, treat it with kid gloves. They like to break!

The deluxe version has a thermometer built in, nice to have all in one to help any temp conversion needed.

Most are glass and you'll be breaking them. For 2011 i broke one and the wife dropped another (2011 isn't over yet so there's still time for me to get a 3rd!). Coopers makes a plastic one that's much more durable.

IMHO hydrometers are pretty essential and the price ranges from (included in a kit) to say $30. I would go with the $30 one and take very good care of it.

Therm in it is a really nice plus. Never broke one myself (in many, many batches) but screwed the thermometer part by putting it boiling wort; don't do that).

Another noob question... I guess this means that it IS ok to open the LBK to take a measurement??? I have read in multiple places not to do this...
