Hey all

I just did my first transfer from primary to secondary. I noticed I lost what looks to be about half a gallon of volume. When I think about it, it makes sense because I'm leaving a bunch of spent material behind. I just want to make sure I did it right and that much loss is okay.

Thanks in advance

Ya, my only transfer to secondary resulted in the same thing. There was a little more head space than I would have liked but it was only in there for a week while it was dry hopping. The end result, the beer is tasty, no signs of oxidation.

Get a 6+ gallon carboy for primary and a 5 gallon carboy for secondary if head space is a concern. Less head space after the transfer. : )
