on 11/20/09 I added 1 1/2 pounds of maple syrup to 2 gallons of porter (originally started on 11/13/09) along with one gallon of water and 1 pound of DME.

Bottled on 12/7/09 and by 12/21 was carbonated OK, and tasted like a nice porter, but no maple flavor. Was not happy about the lack of maple flavor, buy Hey, it was a good porter.

Had another bottle on 12/30 and the maple flavor is BACK!!

So it looks like I just need to be more patient with the maple flavoring.

Primary--brandywine week 3
Primary--porter
Primary--mead week 2
secondary--maple porter
bottled: Scotch ale, porter, maple porter.

That's good news. I wonder if the same would be true in an apfelwein recipe, with maple syrup added... apple maple wine sounds delicious!
