At least attach some food grade tubing to the spigot so that it doesnt splash down to the secondary. I have always racked off the top. It seems like there would be a lot of trub in the spigot that will find its way into the secondary.
When I use my bucket primary, I usually drain the first cup or so into a measuring cup to get all the yeast that is near the spigot, and then attach the tubing and transfer. I then use the cup for filling my hydrometer jar.
