If we took KB hunting, it would have to be bowhunting. He'd never be a gun dog. He does NOT do well with loud noises. 4th of july is hell on earth for him.

Same. We used to have an apartment with a tin roof and when the snow dropped Oaks would scatter lol

Even if my puppy did not hunt at all and was gun shy. Puppy is a girl (young lady) retriever, the best kind of retriver. I've had girls stick their hands in the passenger side window before the car stopped moving, to play with puppy.

You MIGHT be surprised. A shotgun blast is a different kind of noise.

Gunfire doesn't bother Sage in the least; he doesn't even bat an eye at thunderstorms (will lay out in the back yard in the middle of one if I let him). But fireworks scare the ever-loving crap out of him. The first Fourth of July I had Sage, I had it all planned out - the city launches their fireworks display just next to the practice football field, about 300 yards west of my house (with nothing between here and there but the baseball field, a radio tower, and the track/regular football field) I set up a lawn chair in the back yard and some friends came over to enjoy the show. The first mortar went off (they ALWAYS open with a salute as an attention-getter), and that little 30 lb puppy DRAGGED all 300 lbs of me (I was smart enough to have him on a leash) all the way across the back yard, through the garage, down the stairs, and he didn't slow down until he hit the back side of his crate. Ever since then, even though he's an outside dog, every 4th, I set up his travel crate downstairs to let him get away from the noise.

Any kind of loud noise freaks KB out. Fireworks, thunderstorms, hammering, even when my wife is in her craft room because some of the tools she uses make a loud snap. I have to keep treats next to my chair when I watch football and give him one every time there's a touchdown because I can get kinda loud.

My dog trembles like crazy when he hears thunder, fireworks, nail guns, etc. He kind of goes into a daze with eyes glossed over and VERY profuse drooling. I can't even give him a treat because it's literally the only time he doesn't want anything.

Thunder coat. It works for my MIL boston terrier for fire works. he flipped out the first time and tried jumping off the boat. We have one for our extremely skiddish chihuahua and it works well for him too. though he should probably wear it all the time cause he's more paranoid than a pot head. I was skeptical of it actually working but we have met several other folks that have them for these similar situations and have had success with them. You can find them everywhere now. When we got ours they were much harder to find.

Quick question for anyone that has experience...ive raised "normal" puppies, straight from breeder extremely young. But the rescue thing is a little different.

Do I need to wait for her to get fully acclimated to her new life before delving too much into training? We do make her sit, come, or lay down before we give her food or take her out or anything. But I didn't know if it was best to wait a bit to kick it up a notch. We have only had her since Saturday...

Rescues are the only dogs to adopt. There are way too many out there.

We've rescued 2 so far. Both took a few weeks to feel comfortable around the house, and the strange thing is that it's taken a year or so to completely accept the family (pack). It has to be a comfort thing I guess. Jack is the latest and it took him a couple of years.

I'm a "keep it simple" trainer. I fence the back yard and install doggy doors, so house training is as simple as teaching them how to go through the doggy door. Voila. I'm a genious dog trainer I suppose. The deal I give my dogs is simple... don't pee in my house, and don't growl at or bite anyone, and you can do just about anything else you want to do.

wondering if anyone had a clue why my dog would bark at BELLS

not just any bell, but certain ones piss him right the eff off.

first noticed it when I was playing World of Warcraft. the bell sound when you open the Auction House made him bark his butt off.

some ships' bells (sounding the time) make him bark as does the bell rung at boxing matches.

bellhop bells don't bother him

wtf?

Maybe sounds like a doorbell? My dog barks at anything that sounds like our doorbell or a knocking sound.

Might also just be a certain high pitch to some of them that irritate him.

he definitely barks at our doorbell, which sounds nothing like the other bells he barks at

but a hotel desk bell sounds (to me) like the bells he barks at, but he ignores that one

weird effin dog

Been cold here lately.

Article about my wife and me and our dogs. You'll have to zoom in probably.

Actually I think it's too blurry to read

My Wife is heart broken today. Her companion, Nitro, 16yrs, went to sleep last night and didn't wake up. To double the pain, our Brittany, Nellie, 10yrs, was put to sleep last night due too extreme cancer throughout her poor body.
They will be sorely missed.

We have 1 fuzzy child left, Nikki, our 2yr old red heeler.

Sorry to hear Subsailor. Tough enough losing one, but two in the same day - wow.

Here's my best friend Diesel. He's a three year old Olde English Bulldogge. I rescued him when he was 6 months old. Couldn't ask for a better dog. He's great around people and especially kids, he doesn't fight with other dogs at all, even the aggressive ones (despite not being neutered. Oh the horror!), doesn't tear up the house, and he only barks when he's supposed to.

The part that sucks about having animals. I put my dog down a little over a week ago due to cancer also.
I've been looking at rescues, Miss having my buddy around.

Not sure where you're at but my last collie was from a collie breed rescue. Pure breed clubs have rescues too, just a thought. Beautiful dog. Sorry for your loss.

This has been a very sad week for me. His indomitable spirit has been recorded on this forum somewhere. Nothing in this world could contain him and he passed while trying to find his loved ones. He was struck by a car and hung in there long enough for Brenda and I to locate him and do the penultimate thing that only his best friends could do. We miss him terribly.

Sorry for your loss, I love beer but dogs beat beer hands down. Nothing trumps man/woman's best friend.

These are my little ****heads. Jameson is the alcoholic dachshund that I have to physically restrain from taking beer and amazingly, his namesake whiskey. Lilly is just a pup, 1/2 rottie, 1/2 golden retriever...SWMBO got her while I'm still overseas, so I'm haven't met her in person yet. I'm still not convinced that she's not actually a stuffed animal.

Someone needs to start a thread "does your dachshund like beer" one of ours is a total beer enthusiast and I've noticed a lot in this thread that are as well
