Huh? Wha? What thread? I have no idea what you're talking about.

The policy is as follows:

Moving forward, anyone, who is using HBT to sell any product/service or take orders for a future product/service that is not just their old equipment needs a Vendor license.

Posts that violate that policy will be deleted and the poster will be given the opportunity to obtain a vendors license.

It's quite possible that this policy was not enforced vigilantly in the past. This is regrettable but understandable given that the mod team is all-volunteer and the manpower involved has not always matched the rapid growth of the site.

Thanks.

What about posting a market-sizing survey? If someone says "Who would be interested in purchasing my _____ "? Do you need a vendor membership just to do discovery?

If you have an actual proposal, we can run it by the site admin.

Deference is made to paying subscribers.

The policy is written to help us draw a bright line among the Nokia/Viagra chumps, people looking to expolit hobbists, people joining just to pimp wares under the guise of a fellow homebrewer and actual members that are contributing and co-incidently may have a product or service that is equatable to all.

At this point, if you violate, we do a soft delete and work out the details.

A group buy is just that... unless you padded a profit and are looking at it as a revenue generator. Did you?

Nope, I actually lost a little money to paypal...but it wasn't a big deal

I'm not saying this is a bad policy at all, in fact it's a good one...especially for the Viagra folks

It just seems this guy got it a little hard, thats all

It's a tough call, and yeah, we generally haven't been terribly vigilent. The way I view it, it's mostly a matter of intent. Yuri's here to be a part of the community, he's proven that. If he makes $10 to compensate for his time and efforts in making me a CO2 manifold, well, that's wholly incidental.

When someone's primary focus is to use their HBT membership for commercial purposes, that's not cool without a Vendor membership.

With jfrizzell, it was somewhere in the middle. There can't be a hard-and-fast rule here, it's inherently a judgmental process - and the judgement was that his intents were more on the "trying to make some $$" side.

I've been away for a few days on business and was looking for my thread(s). I finally found this thread. I did not receive an explanation from the moderators for why my thread(s) disappeared and wasn't contacted about a "Vendor license". My intent was not to become a vendor and I think I made that pretty clear - I even stated 'I'm not looking to get into the stirplate business'. I thought if I could buy the parts in quantity a save a little bit of money, I'd use that to pay for my efforts in assembling the stirplates. People seemed perfectly ok with that and there was a definite interest/need. There was a history of this with Yuri's previous build so it didn't appear that I was violating any 'rules'. My price was even less than Yuri's so I'm not sure how it appeared that this was a case of me trying to make some $$ on the side. The effort seriously outweighs any profit. SHMBO looks at the time I've been putting into building these and thinks I'm nuts.

I realize I'm somewhat new here and not one of the established 'good old boys' but this seems to be exactly that - 'a good old boys network'. If you are one, well the 'rules' don't really apply to you. If not, well tough luck, we've got some 'rules' for you. No offense to Yuri or anyone else, but I hope you can appreciate how it appears from my perspective. No one bothered to contact me to explain or even give me the benefit of the doubt and shoot me a message first - my posts just got canceled and now I find out there's a new 'rule'. I was trying to do my part and help some people out with what I thought was a pretty fair deal - guess what they say is true - no good deed goes unpunished.

Life will go on and luckily the 10 I bought parts for are spoken for so I'm not out hundreds of dollars.

this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion
Yes, it has. I feel in part responsible. I hope we haven't completely alienated jfrizzell, but it seems that the damage has been done. I think he became the unfortunate example when we as a forum decided to more strictly enforce an existing policy. You'll notice that I have a Vendor account now. Thanks again for all the support here!

:off: I noticed that your name was a pretty shade of blue and assumed you were on your way to MOD status. I was all set to congratulate you.

With the new vendor license, do you have any plans? Or was this just to make you "official."

No mod status for me...we've got a pretty good team of 'em at the moment, and I don't think they're recruiting. But, indeed - I'm "official" now. No big plans except to finish those freakin' conical fermenters I mentioned like a year ago. Yes, I still have them. No, they're not done. I'm a big slacker for that. SWMBO says I have to finish 'em by Christmas, so more to follow...soon! I'll continue making odds and ends for folks as time allows. I'm always open to suggestions!

It has always been HBT policy that anyone doing any vendor related activity on HBT had to have a Vendor membership. We have a Classifieds system setup for people to sell their old equipment and the like. It's not for trying to sell products/services your making or bought to sell. That is reserved for members with a Vendor membership.

If the policy was not enforced well enough that's my fault and I will make sure it's better enforced.
