Hey guys,

Im making a half batch (2.5) version of a 5 gallon recipe.

I have all the ingredients, but have a question about the yeast.

I have a chilled wYeast American Ale package; do I use it all or half of it?

Thanks,
Brady

I would go ahead and use the whole thing. You should be making a starter with the wyeast smack pack or white labs vials anyways (for a 5 gallon batch), so for half a batch, the whole package is probably enough yeast.

You can check how much yeast you need using this online calculator - http://www.mrmalty.com/calc/calc.html

I agree. Use the whole thing. If you save half of it for a different batch, you may risk contaminating the remainder until you are ready to use it.

If it's dry you can go ahead and use half, but in the case of liquid I would use the whole thing. Depending on the OG there may even be no need to make a starter for it.
