I know we all have different things we take on outside of brewing and working to support our brewing.

I'd like to share my main one as of late-

I've been (very slowly as life gets in the way) working on rebuilding a 1972 Porsche 914 that I bought back in 1998 while still in high school.

It's been a long journey, but this past week, it passed NYS inspection and is now cruising the roadways of Upstate New York.

It was a complete rustbucket when I bought it, and throughout the late 90's and early 2000's my father and I worked on stripping it out and repairing the rust. He had owned a new one back in the early 70's, and then bought one again in 2007.

When I went off to college in 2001, it went into storage and sat for quite a few years. Around 2007, my wife gave me the ultimatum of fix it or get rid of it, so out of storage it came and a slow restoration continued. At the time, the rust was settled, but it was still a basket case:

Since getting back from paint in 2008 - kids, a second masters and work travel continued to slow progress, but finally, the fuel injection got sorted out and the reassembly neared completion.... just in time to put it in storage last fall. So, I put the first 6 miles on it since I had bought it 13 years prior driving it to the storage unit, and it was awesome.

Back out if came this spring for the finishing touches. There are some minor things to complete, but I plan to enjoy it as much as I can between now and winter. My daughter seems more excited about "daddy's '14" than I am.

It is still known as the poor mans Porsche - but as with any 40 year old sports car, I think that term has morphed to reflect the owners status after ownership rather than before.

The 928 is my father's - it's a 1982 he picked up a couple of years ago.

The 914 is a blast to drive. The first legal cruise into town on July 4th with the top off ranks up there in the top 5 moments of my life.

Of course - as I walked out of the grocery store - I was asked if it was a Fiat.

That brings back memories. I had a '74 914 that I bought new in 74 - sold it in 80. It was a blast to drive, but had an unfortunate tendency to vapor lock in the summertime. I don't think they designed those for Texas. :(

I'm truly happy for you. I'll bet it was magical. Your little doll will have fun in the future getting taken around town in it.

Nice 914! Here's the 924 that I bought for $800 from someone who begged me to get it out of their driveway. All it needed was a clutch, a set of tires and a good cleaning. Resold it for $4200 3 months later! The next two belong to spoiled rotten friends of mine!

Nice 914! My best friend in High School had one and I had a 1971 MGB... man we had some good times chasing each other around in those cars :ban:

Made the 2 hour trip down the thruway today - she ran great and it was the most interesting drive down that stretch of road ever. Now she's sleeping soundly at home....
