I brewed an AG IPA at 1.068 last Wednesday. I was unsatisfied with the gravity (i love 10+ ABV brews). I boiled 1 pound out extra light DME in 4 cups of water, cooled to room temp and added it to the primary. Does anyone know how to obtain my new gravity measurement. Thank you for any help.

One pound of DME would bring 5 gallons of 1.068 wort to 1.077 or so (about 44 points for a pound of DME, then divided by 5 for the five galloons). Adding a quart of water would dilute it to approximately 1.073.

So, approximately 1.073 for 5.25 gallons.

Assuming it's a 5 gallon batch: 68x5= 340.

1 lb of DME = 44, so new total points is 384, but your volume has increased to 5.25 gallons.

So 384/5.25 = 73.14, so your new OG is 1.073.

Hope that helps.

Okay, let's see. BeerTools estimated the extra light DME as 44 ppg (points per gallon).

That's all the further I can go without knowing how much is in your primary originally. If it was 5 gallons even already in the fermenter, you'll now have 5.5 gallons of liquid.
The 5 gallons will have 68 ppg, so 5*68=340 + 44=388/5.25=73.9

That would mean your new gravity is 1.074.
