I expect to lose some water thru boiling and evaporation. What's an average expected loss? I start with a 6 gal boil and ended up bolling almost 3.5 gals. Is that typical?

How long/vigorous was your boil? If it was just 60 at a low boil, I would say that this is a lot of evaporation! Your boil does not have to be violent! Just enough to get the job done!
