Hi everyone! I'm looking to buy a homebrew kit for my brother as a present. He's new to brewing but I want to set him up with something nice (higher end than Mr. Beer). Most of the kits I've seen look plasticy, is that pretty typical? I've been scouring craigslist and ebay for a setup but no luck in my local area so far.

Can anyone recommend a starter kit? Or, is it better to get individual components, and which pieces of equipment would be the most vital to getting him started?

Thanks for any advice!

Most online homebrew shops have different levels of kits, and most good retail brick and mortar places have them as well. Search for threads asking about upgrades to those kits. Some people like to add a couple of upgraded items to make their kits even better.
