What beer am I looking for?

I want to start a brew in the next few weeks to be ready for the winter months. I'm looking for something with some heft and sweetness but I don't like anything too hoppy. I'd like something with a high ABV content that is dark yet with a certain crispness to it. Any thoughts on what style of...

    New From Westchester county NY

Hello from Westchester! I've lurked the forum from Babylon LI to Port Washington LI and now Cortlandt Manor. Nice to see no matter where I go there is a home brewer-slash-broke student to commiserate with. Good luck with the brewing. I'm just starting now after our move "upstate". It only took a...

    "starter" !?!?!?

Does the DME used for the starter affect the taste? I've seen many different "flavors" of DME, or does it matter

    Yeast quantity

I've started experimenting with 1 gallon batches to learn about variances in ingredients. I'm wondering, can I add too much yeast? Not enough? Or is it simply that yeast present eats fermentables present until there are no more fermentable present? Also, if I got an 11g package of yeast and...

    Basic cider recipe?

My first was with an Ale yeast and juice. One gallon test batch. Toward the end it started to taste like apple gasoline, not good. I added some more juice and bottled it. Worked out to be quite tasty, my wife liked it as well. Did I brew past cider and into vinegar before I bottled it?

    ABV testing?

I put a cup of brown sugar in a gallon or so of apple juice. Thats pretty much the recipe. Interesting technique David... now where's my Bunsen Burner :) :mug:

    ABV testing?

Is there a way to test the ABV after the brew is finished? I don't have a hygrometer... hydrometer... I forget which it is, so I can't be testing SG atm. Beyond that is there a way? Or should I just be quiet and enjoy a tasty brew lol

    Newb MacGuyvering

I recently had some startling success with an apple cider and figured I'd share with those out there crippled by space or Mr Beer syndrome. I ready the "Basic Apple Cider" thread and being a fan of experimentation and cider I started musing a bit. I dont have a lot of room for brewing and...

    Hello from Port Wash. NY

Hi Everyone, Brewing here in Port Washington, NY. I got a Mr Beer some years ago but life in a Big Apple studio isn't so conducive for brewing. Moved to the burbs and now I've had a chance to get into it and I must say there's nothing quite like kicking back and watching a ballgame with a...
