    Cooling Your Wort Questions

I do a full-boil all-grain, but I boil my top-off water beforehand and let it sit, either in the freezer in summertime, or like now, when it's 25 degrees outside, I just let it sit in the cold where I do my brewing outside. It's only a gallon, at most, that I add, but it does seem to help make...

6 days later, the beer didn't ferment

I tried stirring it up tonight with my sanitized spoon, just to see if I get any airlock activity by tomorrow. If not, I'm planning on buying some yeast. Sigh.

6 days later, the beer didn't ferment

Yeah I don't think it's infected. I don't know if the starter fermented normally, I got lazy and didn't take a hydrometer reading of the beer in the starter. But my beer smells normal right now. I also tasted what I drew into the hydrometer, and it tasted like sugary wort, like the stuff I...

6 days later, the beer didn't ferment

So, I looked through all the FAQs and wiki, and while there's tons of info on relaxing, taking hydrometer readings, generally dealing with no bubbles in your airlock, there's not much on what to do after you finally do determine that no fermentation has taken place (or, I failed to find it)...

I washed some yeast in March - still good?

I'm guess I'm gonna just go for it and pitch as I usually would. It doesn't smell like, to borrow a phrase from Revvy, "week old gorilla poop in a diaper left on the side of the road in the heat of summer", but it definitely smells a little different from the other three jars I opened. oh...

I washed some yeast in March - still good?

I ended up with 4 Mason jars of California Ale yeast from White Labs that I washed from one of my primaries. I've used 3 of them with no problems, great beers. Today I made a starter for my next IPA and opened the jar and it smelled a bit off. Did I wait too long to use this one?

My mash temp is too low, will this kill me?

Good point. Two analog thermometers are better than one.

My mash temp is too low, will this kill me?

I still have my other problem, though - when measuring the temp of my sparge water my electronic thermometer says 178 and my old-school one says 165. Which one are you more likely to trust? They've always matched up in the past, until today.

My mash temp is too low, will this kill me?

Never mind, I just opened my mash cooler up to check again (25 minutes into mashing) and the thermometer read dead-on 150. I guess I forgot to RDWHAHB... although it's only 10 am here.

My mash temp is too low, will this kill me?

I think my electronic thermometer decided to go nutty on me this morning. When I poured my grain into my cooler with the 170 degree water, I took a temp reading just like I always do. Instead of 150, it said 164. After a few minutes of stirring, it was still at 161 and I was getting...

Making 2 clones and using the same primary bucket, which would you do first?

Can't believe I didn't think of my growler! You still cap that with a piece of sanitized foil?

Making 2 clones and using the same primary bucket, which would you do first?

I will, as always, take your advice. I've already made my starter in an Erlenmeyer flask, so I guess I'll just take that and make another, larger starter out of it. Just curious, what kind of container do people use for gigantic starters? I imagine if I used the 1L flask again it would not be...

Making 2 clones and using the same primary bucket, which would you do first?

Hi all, Been brewing for 3 years and have never tried a clone, so I decided to try two of them that use the same yeast. I've also never tried the method of transferring the first beer to secondary and using the yeast at the bottom of my primary for the second wort. I ordered the clone...

This Vs. That thread, sanitizer section - no B-Brite?

I would think you definitely have to rinse B-Brite. I always do.

Is it bad to do a diacetyl rest after transferring to secondary?

Thanks guys. I wasn't overly worried and now I'm not worried at all. In fact, Yoop, this is the same lager you were giving me advice on before I brewed it - so I brought the wort down to 56 degrees as per your suggestion (56 was as low as I could get it, it was 90 degrees outside) and stuck...

Is it bad to do a diacetyl rest after transferring to secondary?

I just moved my Mexican Pilsner from primary to secondary and realized I screwed up - the instructions said to bring it up to 60 degrees first for 1-2 days, then transfer. So after transferring, I brought it up to 60-65 degrees for about 36 hours. i'm now cooling it down again. Will it...

Is it a problem if my krausen blows straight through my airlock?

I've seen people say they use sanitized foil before but I never knew why. Now you've convinced me that that's what I should be doing for a starter. One question, the description for Star San says "It is not recommended to use Star San on aluminum or copper because of its acidic nature."...

Is it a problem if my krausen blows straight through my airlock?

yeah, I actually have been making 500mL starters. Are you saying replace the airlock NOW, while the starter is still fermenting? Can I get away with not doing that?
