    You can always just check you gravity. If you don't have a refractometer you should try and get one. They don't use much volume as a hydrometer.

    Secondary removes alot of the trrub and excess yeast. I still use a secondary and cold crash. My beer is clear as commercial beers.

    Bad efficiency on first 2 AG batches. Could it be pH?

    +1 I also had efficiency issues. I bought a grain mill and changed my manifold to copper. That solved the problem. If I started having efficiency issues now I would look at the gap on my mill first.
