    Recipe suggestions

A friend of mine gave me a bunch of hops that I want to use up. Some hops I have used before, some I haven't. I want to make an IPA or possibly a IIPA using these hops, and am looking for some help with the grain bill and hop schedule. I want to do a 5 gallon batch, all grain, using Safale US-05...

    Recommendations for Ferm chamber please!

I want to build a nice fermentation chamber, one that I can completely rely on. I don't want to break the bank, but I can spend some coin. My thoughts are, get a chest freezer, a Ranco, and some type of heat source. I guess my questions are, for you experienced guys, what size chest freezer...

    Ok to check gravity yet?

I brewed an all grain Black Rye IPA with an OG of 1.065. It's been in primary for 16 days now. I have been wanting to transfer to secondary and dry hop it but it's still bubbling...slowly. Maybe one bubble every minute to two minutes. On all my previous brews I waited until it stopped bubbling...

    All grain batch went well

I had posted in the "Who's brewing this weekend" thread about doing my first all grain batch last weekend but never updated to how it went, so I figured I'd post up here. Everything went great. The mash tun I built (10 gallon Igloo Cooler) worked very well, and my mash efficiency was 76%...

    Still fermenting after 3 weeks?

Brewed a Russian Imperial Stout 3 weeks ago, and pitched with US-04. It's been sitting at 64 degrees for 3 weeks. It's still bubbling in the airlock! My OG was 1.070, and last weekend it was at 1.028. I was going to take another sample tonight and check it, but if it's still bubbling should I...

    Dilution question

So I brewed an extract Russian Imperial Stout two weeks ago. I missed my boil off rate, and ended up with a slightly diluted batch. The OG I was shooting for was 1.075, and I ended up with 1.070. I just took a sample and it's at ~1.028. I'm shooting for 1.017-1.020. I pitched at 70, and after 6...

    Quick sparge question

Any reason you can't drain off your first runnings into a sanitized brew bucket, instead of your brew kettle? Say your only source for heating up water is your kettle, and you need it to heat up your batch sparge water while you are mashing in. You store the first runnings in the bucket, then...

Glad I used a blow off!

Brewed a Russian Imperial Stout yesterday, OG was 1.075, so I made sure to use a blow off tube because I figured it was going to be active. Plus, I was putting this one in a closet in my gear room, so I wasn't taking any chances. Glad I did, because after 24 hours she is rocking!

    Grain steeping times

Hey guys, my Pliney extract kit says to immediately soak the grain/hops and remove it when the water hits 170. I always thought you brought the water up to about 155-160, turned the heat off, then steeped for 20-30 minutes. Can someone explain the difference to me?

    Yes, another Pliny clone question

I am giving the Pliny clone extract kit from MoreBeer a try this weekend. It says to immediately steep the grain and first hops and remove at 170. Whats the difference between that and bringing the temp up, flaming out, and steeping for 20 minutes or so? Just wondering...

    Boil volume

Hey guys, last weekend I did my first brew day. I did a 5 gallon batch from a brewers best kit that was an IPA. Everything went well, but I think I boiled off more than a gallon in my 6 gallon boil. It looks like I have about 4.5 sitting in my carboy. It was an hour long boil. I have read that...

    First batch

Hey guys, had my first brew day today and was a blast! Quick question though. When I transferred to the fermenter, I tried to get as much of the trub out as I could but it was a real pain. Also, just poured the yeast into the carboy and put the airlock on, no stirring or anything. This is what...

    Wort chiller clean enough?

Hey guys, a buddy of mine gave me a Wort chiller to use. So I figured I would try to clean it up good before I use it. I have boiled it in a vinegar/water solution twice, and scrubbed it with a sponge and B-brite. Each time when the I dry it off with a paper towel, there is a little residue on...

    Fermentation question

Hey guys, finally getting around to start brewing. I have all my stuff for the most part and will have my first brew day this weekend. One thing I have been obsessing over is fermenting temps. I will be brewing an IPA, so I read that the goal is around 68* for fermenting. My basement is a...

    Question about starting out...

I'm ready to purchase my first set up and I'm at a bit of a crossroad. I will be starting with extract brewing to get my feet wet, but want to get into all grain eventually. I had planned on buying THIS kit to start out with, but my local brew supply shop is telling me to not bother with the...

    Hello

Hey all, name's Walt and I'm from Cambridge NY. That's upstate, not a city person. Anyway, just signed up with the $25 option and this site is slower than molasses for me. I visit a lot of forums but this is the slowest by far, like painfully slow. I'm very interested in home brewing so I plan...
