    Citra Pale Ale/IPA

I'm making 10 gallons of an all Citra pale/ipa (haven't determined the abv just yet) and I'm going to split the wort between at least two fermenters. One yeast will be 1056, but I'm not sure about the others yet. I have packs of Nottingham and T-58 in the fridge, but I'm open to buying new...

    Label ideas - get creative

My family does a secret santa each year and we were slow this year. We haf the party yesterday and as my gift, my uncle, who runs a label shop http://www.ksidrane.com, said he would make me labels for my brewery/beers. He said he could do anything, clear labels, peel off, whatever you can...

    WLP002 lower than 1.010?

I brewed a 1.056 stout 12 days ago and used WLP002 that I had washed twice. The sample measured 1.010, but there was noticeable carbonation so I poured it into a cup and whisked it for a few minutes and let it settle. When I took the sample the second time it measured 1.006. Is it possible for...

    Bottle harvesting questions

I have one 22 oz. bottle from my first batch, a Robust Honey Porter and I would like to harvest the Wyeast 1028 from the dregs. I've done a lot of reading about the process, but I'm not positive. From what I gather, for such a small amount of yeast I'll want to start with a 50 ml starter, right...

    Splitting 10 gallons

I did my first 10 gallon bath yesterday and got to use my new wort chiller, the 5/10 split from more beer, for the first time as well. Now I have a keggle and a wort chiller all thanks to the best wife ever! The recipe was meant to be an APA: 5 lbs 2 row 4lbs Vienna 1 lbs crystal 60 .8 lbs...

    Sweet fermentation

I pitched a packet of rehydrated Nottingham into my first all grain bath last night at 10. When I got home from work today I went straight to the room to check on the fermentor. As soon as I walked in, I said "it smells like a brewery went to happy hour!" I love the first day of a new batch's...

    Washed WLP002 question

I washed my wlp002 cake last week and ended up with it split between three ball jars, but the yeast isn't evenly distributed. Should I try to spread the big ones to more jars, or just leave them be? Thanks

    BIAB with multiple bags

I have a keggle that I like to use for BIAB brewing. I've only done it one; I borrowed a big bag from a friend, but I wont borrow the bag again. Instead of getting a big bag, I was thinking I would just use a few smaller bags instead. Can anyone envision any problems with this method. Also, the...

    Uses for WLP002

I have a stout fermenting away currently, but I want to get started on planning the next brew. My thoughts are to either pitch on the wlp002 yeast cake, or wash it and reuse. Either way, what recipes do people recommend that use WLP002?

Should I dry hop my failed janets brown ale?

I attempted Janet's brown ale two weeks ago this Sunday. It was my first time doing partial mash on my stove top and my efficiency was terrible. I mashed about 9 pounds of grain in three gallons and didn't sparge with a gallon to get my volume back up. Instead i just added a gallon after I let...

How long will a beer last in primary

I brewed in August at my dad's place and haven't had a chance to get back there and bottle it. In fact, it looks like I wont have a chance to do so until November 19th. The brew is a pale ale (OG 1.040, missed my OG by over anticipating my grain absorption in my first BIAB attempt) that I...

    Gift for a homebrewer

Every year, my family does a secret santa. This year I drew my uncle who is also a homebrewer. He's been doing it for about 15 years and makes some really good brew. Currently, I know he does extract + steeping and has some cornies that he uses to keg. He also has an immersion chiller. The price...

    Hoppicratic Oath

Steep 1 pound of Caravienna for 30 minutes. I added it to 3 gallons of water when the temp was 148. I turned the stove down to a 3 on the dial and it slowly rose to 170. I brought the liquid to a boil and added 6 lbs extra light DME (Northwestern). Brought it back to a boil. 60 minute...

    Boil Kettle suggestions

My wife wants to get me a new kettle for birthday. Currently I've been using a 3 gallon stock pot my dad had. I would like to get something large enough for 10 gallon batches, be able to be used as a lauter ton with a false bottom and have a built in valve. It would be great to keep the cost...

    Style suggestions

I want to brew a beer for my birthday (July 2) as well as Independence day. I was thinking it would be an Independence Ale or something like that. What style beer do people think would be most appropriate for this occasion? I was thinking about a California Common, but am open to most anything...

    Brewing terms in everyday life

The other day I caught myself about to tell my wife that I needed to rack the clothes to the dryer. I had a chuckle and started to think what other brewing terms could be used in real life?

    steeping grains

I would like to brew some GF beers for my family members and friends who are gluten free. I am an extract brewer and was wondering if things like quinoa, millet, etc... can be steeped, or must they be mashed? If they cannot be, what is a good extract only recipe. Thanks.

    Broken Grolsch Top

I was given 9 Grolsch bottles by a local bartender. 8 are in great shape and one has a broken top. The bottom is still intact and when there is a gasket on it, I seem to get a decent seal. Do you think I can still use this to bottle, or should I just skip it? Thanks.

    Brooklyn Brewing

I've brewed my first two batches and am about to bottle the first one tonight. Can't wait until this weekend when I brew my third batch.
