Beer Faucet - European Flow Control

These caught my attention... But... What exactly do they do? What is the advantage? Are they just for foam reduction, or is there an effect on head and mouthfeel?

    Another propane thread

The topic of using propane burners indoors comes up periodically. I hate to beat a dead horse... But many homes are equipped with external LP tanks for heaters, ovens, fireplaces, dryers, and more. Has anyone ever tried one of these stockpot burners? If not this brand, just the concept...

    My Import Homebrew

So, I have a little "joke" that I like to play on my homebrew tasting public. Whenever I brew a pilsner or golden lager, I fill a few green bottles and set them aside as "imports." Sometimes I'll expedite the process by putting them in the window sill for 1/2 hour. :) I'll call it my...

    What are you drinking now?

Drinking what I call an "alt." Don't think I hit the target style, but it tastes good. http://hopville.com/recipe/1675313

Fellow homebrewers, meet my new beer engine . . .

I've done both. You have to do it gently if the tip is on, making sure to only press down on the tap handle when it is touching the bottom of the glass (i.e. when it's open so that you don't blow the tip off). The other thing I've tried is making a modified "sparkler" by melting divots into...

    Fermenting in the Pot

I have an idea. It's not that revolutionary, and I thought someone else may have tried this before. Has anyone fermented in the kettle? Here's a little background: I've been brewing for a few years, and I'm tried of going through buckets (Ok, so, maybe I've only bought three of...

FAQ: Aluminum Pots for Boil Kettles?

Head's up to anyone using an Aluminum pot: So, I got an amazing deal -- a turkey fryer at a garage sale for $10. Didn't they know what this can be used for?! :mug: I read about baking the pot. Check. I read about the stainless/aluminum pros and cons. Check. I did not catch the "Don't...

Fellow homebrewers, meet my new beer engine . . .

What I like the most about the British ale experience is the "nitrogen served"/"hand pumped" head and mouth feel, along with the warmer serving temps, malty taste, etc. The Altera pump is one solution, but mine never really did shake the plastic taste. Plus, as mentioned above, it is not...

    Mold in the keezer

Does anyone else have a problem with mold in their keezer? My freezer is always filled with condensation, and especially if I put wood or cardboard in it, I end up with mold. I don't use wood and cardboard any more to store beer or build shelves, but this has made the freezer much less...

My big problem with the altera was the leaking and the "plastic" taste. I have a new one in shrinkwrap (the company was very responsive and apologetic about the leaking). If anyone knows how to fix the plastic taste, please advise. I love the idea.

    Parboiling Blueberries for secondary

I'm not the biggest fan of Hefe. Why did I make two cases of it? ... Well, I guess it was a good experience. So, I've been using them for cooking. This past weekend, I made the pancake recipe from BYO for my wife. Fantastic! I didn't have the right ingredients for the syrup, but I...

OMG forgot to add priming sugar

It's a beautiful ale. I'd hate to crap it up with carb tabs. What's the thoughts on using packets of sugar? Rip and pour... They can even be "free" with a few cups of coffee! :) Do you think they're too unsanitary?

OMG forgot to add priming sugar

Sigh... I just did this. 7th batch, and I had 3/4 of them capped before I realized it. I have some Munton's Tabs, but the last time I used them I ended up with floaters and junk in the beer. Any other ideas? Has anyone ever tried using sugar packets? Was my Muton's tabs experience a fluke?

Crushing Grain with a Mortar & Pestle

I have crushed several pounds of grain multiple times for partial mashes. Although I wouldn't go over 4 lbs, my marble rolling pin and stoneware tray (about 1x2' with a lip) work fairly well. I crush about 1/4 lb at a time, and it takes up to 5 minutes per batch. The consistency is...

Freezing water in ZipLocks to cool wort.

I tried frozen water for the first time in my last batch. I just threw two jugs in the freezer, sanitized them, and cut the plastic open with a sanitized knife. This wheat beer has been fermenting for the past 10 days. So, I don't have a review on the results as of yet. Keep us posted on...

    Pour over ice?

For what it's worth, I tried this on my latest batch, and I had a lot of lag time. It's possible that the purified water didn't have what the yeast needed. Then again, the yeast was on the older side, and the strain of yeast has a history of having a longer lag time. So, make of it what...
