    Massive boil-off question(s)

Cool - thanks for the replies -- I'll factor in the weather a bit more next time, and as I said, I'm still dialing in the system. Worst case scenario, at the end of the day I have beer, right?

    Massive boil-off question(s)

On this weekend's brew (my 4th all-grain batch, so I'm still dialing it in and hammering out my process) I had a great brew day - it was around 19°, so a bit chilly, but I nailed my mash temps and held it in my coleman cooler MLT without any real trouble. (Batch Sparged) I ended up with...

What Would my OG be if I had 1 Gallon Less Wort

I had exactly the opposite problem this weekend . . . ended up ten points over my gravity with a gallon less wort than I figured. I assume that it will just be stronger flavored beer . . .

danger - injury - extract newbs like me read this

I suspect that the cool air in the container was rapidly heated by the near boiling water. Any contraction that takes place is negligible in that space. Anyhow, glad the OP got out of it with little more than a minor burn.

    Bavarian Pretzel Recipe

16 pounds of homemade bratwurst are ready to go for this weekend's Oktoberfest kickoff! (Although I have doubts about my first go at a wheat beer) I've done test batches of Laugenbretzel recipe the original post this week, I felt that my first go at the recipe the OP put up was a little bit...

Hello & Welcome to my Midlife Crisis!

It's cheaper than a sports car. More fun in my opinion too! Welcome! Get brewing - I suggest keeping it simple for the first brew (I was a wreck the first time, worried about temps & times & sanitation -- but, now it is automatic and much more relaxing)

My UDS! - Let me know what you think!

Nice, Thanks for sharing the video and pics - man i wish I could weld or knew someone with a welder. :-) I'm on the lookout to pick up a weber 22.5" grill that I can sacrifice to the BBQ gods to expand the capacity of this thing if we entertain. Double decker grills and a raised roof! I...

    Stir-bar overkill?

A colleague at work (Chem teacher) handed me a stir bar this morning as a thanks for some help this summer in a training. It is an unused (packaged) 2.5" stir bar (egg shaped). I can't wait to try it out, but I'm wondering if it is more than I need, could there be any drawback to using it...

Kolsch yeast early activity - too early?

My Koelsch was the first time I used a starter, I also stuck it in the fridge for a day or two before brewing with no ill effects. Fermentation took off like a rocket. Can't be much different than pitching a vial of WL yeast I should think. I guess some might say you left it open to...

    10g yeast starter?

I had visions of a Keggle-sized stir plate. Boo.

    Why Erlenmeyer Flasks for Starters?

+1 to this, this makes it super simple I don't know how much of a concern this is, but I was warned when buying my flask at my LHBS that the glass "Isn't what it used to be" I have had no issues heating over the gas, but there are no brand markings on the flask, so I am cautious when I...

    Why Erlenmeyer Flasks for Starters?

I don't see why not, my first advice on getting started with starters was to use a growler and swirl it whenever you walk past. I think an Erlenmeyer flask is ideal for a simple stir plate setup because of the flat bottom and the graduations on the side, and you kind of get to look like a mad...

What else is homemade at your house??

We challenged ourselves to go without buying bread for a month, that was back in March and we haven't looked back since. I started looking up purchasing flour in 50# sacks yesterday and we buy yeast in 2# bricks, I'd say we are committed. We do homemade sausage, some badass pasta sauces...

My UDS! - Let me know what you think!

No, it was an unlined, reconditioned drum. I burned it out to ease my mind since I don't really know what was in it before. Then I coated the whole inside with grilling pam and seasoned the inside. It has a nice coating of grease and smoke inside giving it that black look.

My UDS! - Let me know what you think!

I was shopping craigslist and found one with a liner for ten bucks, but that would have been a hell of a drive to pick it up. I did some research and found a Barrel place in Pittsburgh - Penn Barrel (been there since 1908 or something like that) - They sold me a reconditioned unlined drum for...
