    Help with BJCP Belgian style

I realize they would be out of style, but I can only enter one as a Belgian specialty ale. I don't know that much about how beers are scored. Would one be more out of style than the other? The strong ale only has a hint of cherries, but the black tripel is very black.

    Help with BJCP Belgian style

I am planning on entering a couple of competitions soon, and have 2 beers to enter. One is a belgian strong ale aged on cherries. The other is a "black" Tripel. As far as I can tell, both should be belgian specialty ales. However, most competitions won't let you enter multiple beers in the same...

Help with tap rod keg for cask conditioning

A friend of mine has an old keg from his grandfather that we are planning on using for a cask conditioned ale. From what I can tell it is a "tap rod" style keg. The hole on top is 7/8" in diameter and has no valve. What are options for dispensing? Ideally we want to connect it to a beer engine...

    old ale recipe

Thanks for the info. I do always try to be as historically accurate as possible. I didn't want the ale to have an overpowering oak taste like a lot of the barrel aged beers on the market do, rather just a hint of oak for complexity sake. Would 2oz of chips be too much, or not enough? I've...

    Help, first recipe (oatmeal stout)

See what you think. I changed to dme and lme to light and nb gold, bumped up the chocolate and oats, and added roasted barley, while decreasing the (de-bittered) black. 1.00 lb Light Dry Extract (8.0 SRM) Dry Extract 8.13 % 3.15 lb nb gold Liquid Extract (12.5 SRM) Extract 26.83 % 4.00 lb...

    Help, first recipe (oatmeal stout)

I am planning on making my first recipe, and first partial mash (I have done 6 extract kits so far). I like Sam Smith's and Barney Flats, but was aiming for something smoother and less roasty like Dark Horse One or Barley Island's Brassknuckles. Let me know what you think. 1.00 lb Briess...

    Icky stout- green or infected?

Just had another bottle. Compared to last week, the taste definitely continues to worsen. One month ago it tasted a lot like guiness, but with a bad aftertaste. Now the guiness taste is gone, and all I taste is the bad aftertaste. Would this happen if it was just the tannins?

    Icky stout- green or infected?

Newbie question I realize this topic has been addressed ad nauseum, but I haven't found an answer that directly pertains to my case. My first brew was a Midwest irish stout kit. I followed the 1-2-3 schedule. The first bottle I tried tasted a lot like guiness, but had a very bitter finish. I...
