The Benefits of holding back sparge water v full volume mash BIAB

Bobby, so you put all of your water in the kettle for the mash? I am transitioning to BIAB and am concerned about having a water to grist ratio greater than 1.5 qts per pound of grain. That was something that was always stressed as being important for whatever reason. In your experience it...

Mounting chugger pumps on the stand. High or Low?

Oh, sorry about that. Mine are the side inlet. Center inlet would seem odd pointing down.

Mounting chugger pumps on the stand. High or Low?

My experience has been that it works best to orient the pump head so that the inlet to the pump is pointing down towards the floor. Not sure if that helps in your setup or not.

Water Chemistry Beyond the Primer – Lots of Questions – Would Appreciate Your Help

I add my brewing salts to the mash tun rather than to the strike water in the HLT. Just mix it in as you add the strike water to the mash tun.

    Water. AGAIN :-)

If it is RO water I think it is safe to assume that it has zero minerals in it. At least that is what i do. So you can use water calculators like bru'n water, EZ water and the like.

    CO2 tanks. Inside or Outside?

I have mine inside as well. It does take up a lot of room. It also leaves rust rings on the bottom of the keezer (steel tank).

    Stainless ball vaves

My understanding is that brass may leech bad things into the wort.

Using a hydrometer to check pre boil gravity technique?

I don't chill mine at all. Just stir the wort, take a sample and then plug the number and temperature into a program that corrects for temperature.

Erlenmeyer flask necessary for a stir plate starter? Why not use any?

Compare the results from other pitch rate calculators. Mr. Malty also assumes that your smack pack will have much lower viability over time. Woodland Brews has shown that properly refrigerated smack packs lose very little viability. That is very interesting and good to know. How do you...

    Beer lines between batches

I recently left starsan in my lines for a couple weeks and had a problem. The lines clouded up and when I pushed a dip tube brush through them, gelatinous goo came out. I guess my mix was too strong and it ate away the inside of the tubing.

    Homebrewers in Charleston WV?

We did something similar in Wheeling. We have a large group on FB for general beer lovers and then we have a private group where we post most of the homebrew stuff.

    NHC 2015 - Registration Open

I don't understand this. Can someone please explain. Does a beer have to score higher than 34 to be eligible for a gold metal? I understand that a beer must score at least a 30 in order to receive a metal and move on but was not aware that there are further restrictions. Thx

Interesting ways to include oats in beer?

I recently did an IPA recipe that had 1 lb of flaked oats. Turned out great. Great fluffy head with great retention.
