I'm preheating my mash tun right now and about to dough in and test my luck with a 4 step infusion mash then a 5 hour boil. Feel free to watch. I'll try to check the chat window when I can. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/bsdx

    Disassembly of Ranco thermometer probe

http://www.bsd-unix.net/~bsdx/index.php?dir=pics%2Finside-ranco-probe%2F Its not pretty and I'm not one to do things cleanly. My goal was to see what you would have to do to get it apart if water got in there, and how to potentially fix it. I used vise grip pliers, needle nose pliers, and...

Argh... tested my waterproof handheld thermometer today

Dropped it right in the first runnings in the BK! The head just barely floated, gave up trying to fish it out with the spoon and went for the cold water + hand in bag trick. So far its still working but the LCD was angry due to the heat at first, I rinsed it under cool water for a few seconds...

    Über lacing

Was hitting the IPA hard the other night, finished my mug and was amazed at the thick but many zebra stripes on my glass especially by the bottom. It looked a little better in person.

Decent base for a baby brew stand?

Scored it from work. Feels pretty solid, bolted together, painted steel. Used to hold what I would describe as an industrial looking laminator so I think it should be sturdy.

Sneaky boston Lager bottle = 4 year old Imperial Stout, mmmm

So dinner is on the table and I am thirsty so I take a quick look at my beer fridge of commercial samples, quickly settle on a Sam Adams Boston Lager. Label looked intact, never guessed anything until I cracked it open and it poured BLACK AS NIGHT with a brown head! wtf....oh, YEAH! sneaky 4...

Black IPA / CDA (carafa black malt) to counter alkaline water?

I know a precise answer cannot be given without proper details, but I've heard in general, alkaline water would work better with dark beers because the roasted malts contribute acidity to reduce the pH for the mash. Could this be true also for Carafa black malts, at least in part? I plan to...

Could too much burton salts taint yeast for repitching?

Short story is I didn't do enough homework and put way too much burton water salts into DI in the IPA I made recently (1.5oz for 5g). Tasted it this morning before dry hopping and it had a definite salty after taste, I don't want to drink it. I won't. Maybe some college students would if I...

I may have dry hopped my star san

I have a tub of star san in the garage that has been made up around 2 months, I'm sure I've sanitized a plastic mesh bag that had previously soaked in PBW and rinsed. Or does it just start to smell astringent or something after a while? Could it have picked something up from the plastic tub or...

    REALLY smacking the pack

My brewing buddy was smacking some yeast packs for tomorrow on my desk and smacked it so hard the package of yeast spilled open and some went on my carpet :/ :drunk::confused: How do I count yeast cells in carpet so I know how big of a starter to make with the remainder? :cross: rhetorical...

Tasted my first AG batch tonight :)

Biermuncher's Ode to Arthur... I get the feeling my efficiency was not stellar because I got less ending volume than I expected after I topped off my boil pot to meet the expected OG 1.044, but I'm okay with that for the first try. My recipe was for 6g so if my efficiency was bad it would just...

    Input on a smoked red?

I'm thinking about making a smoked red beer. I was first planning on making a normal red, probably based on this: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f65/quaffable-irish-red-all-grain-scrappers-98524/ And then I bought some Briess Cherry smoked malt because it sounded good and it smells FANTASTIC...

My airlock never bubbled, it must be done fermenting, right?

The whole time the airlock never bubbled once. I must have made NINJA BEER! I didn't know ninjas liked oktoberfest. Darn, no, just NORMAL beer with a crushed inner piece to the airlock. This is just your real world regular PSA to make sure your fermenter is sealed and the airlock is working.

Two stupid questions about 2-row and pils

I bought a sack of Briess pale 2-row, a sack of Briess 2-row, and a sack of Briess Pilsner 2-row in that order. 1. How do I know what country the Pils is from, is it actually from Pilsen? I can't seem to find information on that sack or from briess.com. 2. I basically don't have a good...

5 minute inspection for bulk 1/2 bbl / corny keg purchase?

Tonight a friend is going to be looking several dozen kegs to evaluate if we want to buy them. Probably mostly cornys and to a lesser extent some 1/2 bbl kegs. We know how to identify pin lock vs ball lock (assuming those are the only two types on a corny that we would care about for...

    Experiment: Fermenting in the bottle

Just as an experiment, I thought about what would happen if we skipped all the potential steps of primary, secondary, and bottling pail and just racked straight from the cooled brew kettle into a sanitized glass bottle. Sometimes it just feels like too many steps through too many containers. I...

Using multiple mash tuns or MLTs?

I am under the impression that it is better to have a taller MLT than it is to have an extremely wide one, at least as far as (fly) sparging is concerned; the less wide and thin it is, the better your efficiency should be. The reasoning why you probably don't want to have a 25+ gallon MLT for...
