    Water: Filter or RO?

Thanks everyone for your input. I decided to get some RO water from the grocery store and try using it with some salt additions. If it goes well I might look into a RO system. Right now I have only been brewing about once or twice a month, but would like to brew more once I get my water...

    Water: Filter or RO?

Hi all, Since moving into a new house, I had some off flavors with my beers. I narrowed down the problem to my water. My tap water has a faint sulfur odor, is hard, highly alkaline and from what I gather it is treated with chloramine. My last batch I used spring water and it improved my...

Sierra Nevade Lost Guy Rye Ale

I was at a restaurant yesterday and had a Sierra Nevada Lost Guy Rye Ale. I did a search for it when I got home and apparently it is one of their Beer Camp brews. Has anyone else had this and more importantly, does anyone have any idea of what the recipe might contain? Thanks, Lou

    My final wish...

I use two 1500w heatsticks for my 5 gallon batches and it works great. I get a steady rolling boil in my kettle and don't need to use a stove. Just be sure to plug them into separate circuits on separate breakers. I saw another website that recommended you use acetone to thin out the JB weld...

Trying to decide next upgrade (plate chiller or mill)

Mill, especially if your current chiller works well for you.

    Bleech vs sanitizer.

I started out using bleach, but I hate how it smells, how it makes the carboys slippery and how I had to rinse it. Once I started kegging, I switched to star san. Each time I brew, I mix a fresh 5 gallons to sanitize my fermenter and then siphon it into a keg and use that batch to sanitize my...

Need some help getting equipment to an APO

When I was stationed in Germany, I had to call some places and let them know what the deal was. They will need to ship via US Postal Service. This may increase shipping some. I never had a problem with the larger online stores like Amazon.

    Electric Brew System Questions

Thanks all for the replies. I will look into building a control box. Will I need two PIDs, one for the HLT and one for the BK?

People that won't drink your beer...

Try making a single malt and single hop blonde ale. If you don't keg and are worried about people being turned off by sediment, pour the beer into a glass for them. They probably won't even know its homebrew. I think many homebrewers try to make craft beers with very strong flavor profiles...

    120v 5 gal questions

I also use two 1500w heat sticks plugged into two separate 20A outlets. I reach boil temps pretty quickly and get a really vigorous boil. No controller is required.

I'm leaving a LOT of beer in the brew kettle--help

The local microbrewery here does a whirlpool and then cools through a large plate chiller. Granted, they also filter their beer, but they don't worry about trub getting into the fermenter. However, even before the filtering, the beer is pretty clear. It really boils down to your own...

I'm leaving a LOT of beer in the brew kettle--help

After you cool your wort, slide one of these over your racking cane and it will allow you to filter out the hops. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002CQTXBC/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

    Complete newbie

See if there is a local homebrewing club or maybe a class offered through your locak homebrew shop so you can get an idea of what is involved. Also, this website and the How to Brew online book already linked are good sources of general info. Check Craigslist for used equipment. Many items...

    Electric Brew System Questions

Thanks to this message board, I have switched to electric brewing using two 1500 watt heat sticks which has made brewing more fun and easy compared to the turkey fryer. I would like to upgrade to a 10 gallon brew system using 5500w heating elements in my HLT and kettle, and keeping my 48qt...

Kettle recommendations for new AG brewer

I own two of these and am happy with them. I do 5 gallons right now but they have space to expand to 10 gallons. You can easily drill a hole for a valve, sight glass, etc. Or, just use and immersion chiller and racking cane with a stainless steel scrubber on the end if you aren't comfortable...

    Manifold suggestions please

I was using a SS hose braid and kept getting stuck sparges. I ended up building a copper manifold and it works much better. I used a drill press to make 3/32" holes in the copper tubing and just dry fit everything together. I batch sparge, but could fly sparge with this system if I ever have...

    Hop strainer?

Earthbound, I would be interested to see how that works for you. I built a copper manifold and it works well with whole leaf but not pellets and am looking for alternatives I can use with a heating element.

    Batch Sparge...Even Amounts?

I mash in at 1.25 quarts per pound of grain. Then I do a mash out so my first runnings will be half my pre-boil volume. The batch sparge should be the same amount as you collect from the first runnings. For example, I usually collect 6.5 gallons (26 quarts) of pre-boil wort. Using 10 pounds...

    Stuck Sparge and Low Efficiency

Hi all, I am currently using a three roller monster mill at factory settings to grind my grain. Batch sparging with a 48 qt cooler and hose braid, I am getting stuck mashes and about 70% efficiency. I am not using wheat in my beers. I mash at 150-155 deg and add water for a mash out to...
