    Brew Pot in Freezer?

I got a new brew pot and it doesn't fit in my sink, which is where I usually chill the wort. Is it safe to put a lid on it and stick it in the freezer for a little while? Please reply quickly, I have about 25 mins left in the boil. Thanks!

    Orange Heffe

I am planning on brewing a heffeweizen in a few days. I was going to use a standard heffe recipe (5 lbs wheat lme, 1 lb light lme, 1oz hallertau, 1oz cascade) but I want it to have just a hint of orange flavor. Should I throw a bunch of fresh orange slices right in the fermenter? Or is there a...

    Priming with wheat DME

I am about to bottle my third batch of beer and have already used the corn sugar and dme methods of priming. I was wondering if I can use wheat DME to prime. The recipe for the beer had wheat in it so I thought it would work but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks :rockin: :mug:

    Stocking as grainbag

Is it OK to use a new women's leg stocking as a grainbag? I plan on brewing today but don't have a muslin bag nor know where to get one so I was thinkin about picking up a pair of stockings at the drug store to use...any thoughts?

    Preserving DME

I have to break into my plastic bag of DME tonight to make a starter. I don't have a way to vaccum seal the bag so I was wondering how I should seal the bag back up to keep it fresh until this weekend when I brew. Can I wrap the bag up in aluminum foil and stick it all in the fridge? I want to...

    Problem with AHS specialty grain

So I just got my ingredients to do my first original IPA recipe and I have a slight problem with my grain. I ordered 1lb of Crystal 20L and 8oz of Carapils and asked for the grain to be "milled". Now I thought that meant they would crush the grain for me and ship it in a muslin bag for...

    Steeping Carapils

I'm using carapils for the first time on my IPA that I will be brewing next week and recently saw on howtobrew.com that this grain must be mashed. The problem is that AHS mixes my grains in one muslin bag so I have 8oz of carapils mixed with 1lb of my crystal 20L. Will I get any of the good...

    Floating in secondary

I have my second batch in the secondary right now and I plan to bottle this weekend. However I have noticed a few "islands" of white spots appearing at the surface of the beer. Could this be contamination or is it just clumps of yeast rising to the surface? I'm sorry I can't provide a picture...

    Homebrewing speech

I just had my first speech in my class "Public Speaking" and decided to do it on brewing beer. I was the only one in the class that actually received complements on my speech. My visual aids were a primary fermenter (my secondary has beer in it and cannot be brought on campus), a bottle capper...

    Head retention

What are some things that can be done to create a nice creamy head that doesn't dissapear after a few sips. I've heard that steeping a cup of oatmeal will help. Any other suggestions?

    Stuck fermentation?

I've heard the term "stuck fermentation" on this site a few times and was wondering what exactly is it? What are the factors that contribute to it and how can it be fixed?

First taste of the first batch

So today was bottling day and what a stressful day it was. Cleaning and sanitizing 40 some bottles plus equipment, siphoning difficulty and the fact that I was doing it solo all contributed to the mayhem. However I did get to sample my flat room temperature home brew and to my delight it tastes...

    Starting syphon with mouth

I know its a no-no, but if I don't have an autosyphon handy can a syphon be carefully started with the mouth or is there just too much bacteria in the mouth to maintain sanitation?

    Rinsing bottles with tap water

I am about to bottle my first batch of homebrew. After I sanitize the bottles in a bucket of bleach-water, is it really that harmful to rinse them with tap water? Or should the rinsing water be boiled first as howtobrew.com suggests. I don't think Papazian's book addresses this issue and I want...

    Tannins

I have accepted the fact that my first homebrew, which will be bottled this coming Sunday, will have lots of tannins in it due to the fact that I boiled my crystal malt grains in the wort for 60 minutes. I am also worried that I scorched the LME by pouring it all (7lbs) in at once, but that is a...

    Re-used vs Store bought bottles

I was wondering if there is an advantage to buying new bottles from a LHBS as opposed to simply washing and sanitizing previously drank beer bottles, such as the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale bottles. I am about to bottle my first brew in about a week and have been saving the SNPA bottles. Are they ok...

    Austin Home Brew Kits

I was thinking about buying AHB's clone of Magic Hat #9 but thought I would ask if anyone has had good experience with their clone kits. Do they include everything I need such as steeping grains and hops? Or is it just a pre hopped extract that they make?

    Steeping Grains

When using steeping grains such as crystal malt, should they be thrown in at the beginning of the boil or simply steeped in hot water (in a grain bag) before the wort is boiled and removed prior to adding the malt. Is there a disadvantage to boiling crystal malt for 45mins-1hr? This is...
