    Whole vs. Pellet hops

I prefer whole hops. Pellets are brown in color and I don't like that. I compare it to smoking Mexican dirt, or indoor skunk #1. They're sister related plants BTW.

    Final preperations

I haven't worked with dry yeast in over 10 years. This is his first time brewing, I'm confused, when should he do this so that it won't affect the timing and tempature of when he should pitch the yeast? I use all glass, for fermenting and secondary. I prefer glass and it's handy to have...

    Secondary fermentation question.

It sounds to me like you could do it tomorrow night or Thursday. At least 1 week. :mug:

    Question About Blowoff hose

What do you have the other end of the blowoff tube in? You should have it submerged in a bucket of water to prevent air/contamanents getting into the fermenter.

looking to start my first brew

No, I don't like the look of that recipe's ingredients. Once I checked out that link, I said "where is this guy". Turns out you're just down 169 from me in Mankato. Tell me you've been to Bandana Brew Pub where Dave Berg is the master brewer. He's also the president of the Minnesota Brewers...

looking to start my first brew

You have plenty of glass carboys, if I were you, I wouldn't use the plastic fermenting bucket. Get some blowoff tubes and put water in the bucket and submerge the tubes in the water like so. And I would test the kegs if you plan on using them, the gaskets can go bad on them. And if...

Connecting CO2 to Kegs question. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the help everyone, I can't believe I made it out to be difficult when it was so easy. I'm not new to brewing, I'm new to kegging. And man, the beer is just awsome. I love how it flows out alot like Guinus from the tap where it starts out foamy and then the beer races up the inside of...

    fermentation question

This is what i would try to do. Brew the beer and put in primary, then transfer to seconary the day before you leave even if it hasn't been a full week. Hopefully at least 5 days though. After you transfer to secondary, place the carboy in the coldest area of the house as possible, like the...

Connecting CO2 to Kegs question. What am I doing wrong?

Great, thanks guys. 1 more thing, the 2 levors below the regulators, in the picture you see one verical(straight up and down) and 1 tilted slightly. Where do I want to position those levors? Edit: And to condition I want the PSi to be 25 right? Then when I'm ready to pour bring it down to...

Connecting CO2 to Kegs question. What am I doing wrong?

This is the first time ever working with a 5lb CO2 canister and regulators. I have this CO2 regulators. http://www.midwestsupplies.com/products/ProdByID.aspx?ProdID=4884 When I connect this to the CO2 canister I'm unable to get the CO2 to open up. Looking at it closer, do I need to do...

    First batch tastes like plastic

Do you do your fermenting in plastic?

    Equipmnt or first time brewing

And where EXACTLY did I say that? I know Dave Berg the president of the Minnesota Brewer's association who got the law passed in Minnesota for brew pub's to sell 1 gallon grawlers, and I tell you this. He NEVER stores his beer in plastic at Bandana's Brew Pub in Mankato MN where he's the...

    Equipmnt or first time brewing

You'll never catch me doing that. I have a plastic bootling bucket, but now that I keg, my beer never comes in contact with plastic. I have 3 - 5 gallon glass carboys. Then I use the third one to transfer to secondary, clean and sanitize the dirty carboy and transfer the 2nd brew into...

    Equipmnt or first time brewing

I don't know why people would brew their beer in plastic. Do you drink/pour your beer from plastic bottles? I don't. If you're bottling, you'll need bottle caps and a capping tool. Edit: I bought my 2 Kettles on sale at Kohls over 10 years ago for $10 each. The brew store had the same...

    A quick kegging question

When was the keg last used? You might have to get new gaskets for it if it's been a few years.

    barley wine in fermenter

At what temp is the big question. 70 or below and 4, maybe 6 weeks you'll be fine.
  18. M

To secondary ferment or not. That is the question.

I'm not in brewing to save money, and even though that happens, I'm in it to make great beer. You can get beer this good at a liquer store and if you did it would be upwards of $10 a 6 pack. Back when I bought my hops and liquid malt in bulk, and then would buy my grains when ready to brew, it...

    High temps during Fermentation?

That is really hard to say and varies. 75 degrees is the highest temp you want to ferment at, I prefer 72 degrees.
