    Saison "non-barley cereal grains" ???

That comes straight from the 2015 BJCP Guidelines. However, the overwhelming majority of recipes I find call for 2 row or pilsner malt as their base. Aren't both of those barley?? When I read "non-barley cereal grains" I'm thinking more of oats, wheat, rye etc.... Can anyone clear this...

    Interesting beer factoids

Found this on another forum and though it interesting.... Before thermometers were invented, brewers would dip a thumb or finger into the mix to find the right temperature for adding yeast. Too cold and the yeast wouldn't grow, too hot and the yeast would die. This thumb in the beer is where...

    Krausen and DME vs LME

Has anyone noticed a difference in the volume of Krausen when using one type of malt extract as opposed to the other? I'm currently working on my 4th brew, a Kolsch, which is also what my 3rd batch was. 3rd was 100% LME and the 4th had three pounds of DME. There's a pronounced differences in...

Yeast starter but no Krausen at all.....

This is my first attempt at making a starter. Do/should you always have a Krausen in your starters? I followed the directions on the Wyeast web site. 1/3 cup of DME in 1 pint of water. Boil for 15 minutes, cool, airate and pitch yeast. 21 hours later and very little activity in the...

Now this will take the cake for stupid mistakes.

I THINK, I'll know for sure in a few minutes, that I shorted myself a gallon of water when I put my wort into primary a week ago. I might be wrong but, it looks a little low and this would explain why my OG was higher than I expected...... So, my question is should I top off the secondary...

    Side by side fridge question..

Has anyone modified a side by side fridge as such. Use the normal fridge side as a fermenter for carboys, kegs etc..... Then replace the freezer thermostat with another fridge thermostat. Then mount your taps on the outside of the freezer thus making it a kegerator on one side and a...

    Missed OG by 10 pts!!!

What would cause the gravity to be that far off? The recipe is a Kolsch. LM Extract & steeping grains. I followed the directions to the letter. 2.5 gallon boil and topped off to exactly 5 gallons in primary. Ran the wort through a kitchen strainer while putting it into primary to remove...
