Why do homebrewers use gravity instead of plato?

After brewing a beer with a commercial brewer, everything is done in plato. When the brewer converts the lingo to a homebrewer, he has to calculate that into gravity. A brewer friend asked, "Why don't we use gravity?". Why don't we homebrewer's use plato for our measurements instead of gravity?

Kegging tip when C02 into keg sounds funny

So, I kegged 6 beers one night and the next day put them on c02. Two were acting funny though, one wasn't holding pressure (still need to fix that), the other was, but when I turned c02 on it, it would sound weird. After trying to connect the beer tap weeks later, I discovered they were switched...

Multiple remote temp sensors for fermentation

Hello all, I ferment in my basement and use a digital temperature monitor like this: http://www.amazon.com/La-Crosse-Technology-WS-6020U-IT-Temperature/dp/B004AED48M/ref=sr_1_10?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1351104162&sr=1-10&keywords=la+crosse+sensor to monitor the temperature via the remote...

    Recipe feedback: Citra/Amarillo Pale Ale

Any thoughts/suggestions on this all-grain recipe I came up with? Looking for a basic lighter pale ale using Citra. 10 gallon batch: Yeast: - Safale US-05 (dry two packs) Grain: - 14lb 2-row pale malt - 2lb German Pilsner - 2lb Flaked Oats - 2lb Crystal 40 (or perhaps just 1)...

    c02 regulator connections

I picked up a regulator at a flea market a while back and finally got around to installing it. However, when I turn the pressure up, I hear and feel a leak from the cylinder to regulator connection. So, I want to take it apart and put some pipe threading on it and reattach to fix, but... I...

What would you make with these ingredients?

Doing a brew for my club that is doing a round 1, which entails finding the best malt make-up and mash schedule using all the same hops and yeast. Round 2, will use the winning malt/mash schedule, and go crazy with hops and yeast. Here is what I have to use and have to stick to: 1 oz Bravo...

    Diacetyl

Got a question for you... I brewed a cream ale a while back but fudged the water numbers and ended up with a more concentrated cream ale, very high for style for sure. Anyway it was a 10 gal batch and i got about 4 and 4 (if that) in two fermenters. I used a cream ale yeast (WLP080) in one, and...

    medical oxygen tank

So i bought this tank off craigslist thinking I would be able to use it like my other c02 tanks. But it has a different valve. With a quick search on here, i've read they're hard to get filled. I'm wondering if there is a way to either change out that valve to your typical industrial c02 type...

C02 in Corny draft pour vs. Commercial draft pour

OK i've been wondering, us who keg homebrew, to get it right, usually wait days or weeks at a low PSI to get the right pour without too much foam. However, once I was at a restaurant where I got a beer, and i told them it was flat. They did some fixing, and got another and it was carbed...

    All Grain Brewing Set-up

I posted this for a couple of reasons: 1. To share my process with people who might learn from any of it 2. To get feedback and learn from the people here. As a brewer you never spend enough money and time trying to improve what you do. On my last brewday I jotted down a lot of notes on what...

    Setup revision critique

G'day all, been screwing around with gravity feed for a while while i try to get all the equipment etc. together to build a one tier system. What do you think about this proposed set-up? I will be replacing the 2nd burner so it is not resting on wood, and will be replacing/getting all silicone...

    Induction & Infrared

Anybody looked into these for brewing or decoction? I have a pot that is 12" in diameter and i "think" it might fit on the induction cooktop, but if it doesn't, will it be useless for decoctions? For the infrared, was gonna buy another bayou classic banjo burner but came across this. thoughts...

    Lock for keezer

I've converted my freezer into a keezer and have put a wooden collar on it. I had a bottle of Bailey's and another white chocolate liquer that grew legs and walked away. The keezer is stored in the garage. Anybody have any good ideas for a locking system that will not be a big PIA for me to get...

Slight sweetness, yeast didn't do its job?

So I made a california common a while back and kegged it last week, tasting it now and it has a distinct sweet taste to it. I'm wondering if it didn't fully ferment and has some residual sugars or something else entirely? My OG was 1.055, the style is 1.048 to 1.054. The FG was 1.018, the style...

    Any Issues With Northern Brewer?

I made a purchase from Northern Brewer a few months back for a grain mill and a march pump. Grain Mill was great. March Pump had some threading issues on the "IN" (something was out of whack on threading and barbs go on crooked causing a leak), so I sent them a message on their website but...

    Recipe Advice with Hops

OK so tomorrow i'm brewing the Summer Ale, What-if Version, c. 1830 recipe from the Radical Brewing book. When I went to buy my ingredients yesterday I thought it was a lot of hops, and after plugging it in Beersmith, the beer is a whopping 90 IBU's. My issue is that I wanted to use Challenger...
