$1,000 to spend - what do you buy?

I would suggest you start out with the BIAB all grain process (15 gallon vessel and a big grain bag). This would would get you into all grain process and save you some cash that you could spend on a propane burner, fermentation chamber, stir plate and some kegging equipment.

How many brew on a wood deck?

I brew on my deck as well. Heat rises and boil over messes come of with a warm water discharge from the immersion chiller.

Therminator froze. Do you think it's ruined?

I worried about the ability to properly clean a counterflow chiller, hence my love affair with my immersion chiller. I doubt I could be convinced to convert to a chill plate type design unless it could be disassembled, cleaned and reassembled. Thanks Jamil for making me a germaphobe!

I cold crashed 5 gallons American IPA,

I have never been a fan of carb tabs but in this situation it may be an easier to add 1 or 2 tablets to each bottle rather than measuring out 1.12185 grams 48 times. http://www.midwestsupplies.com/brewer-s-best-conditioning-tablets.html
