    1st Apfelwein

Made my first Apfelwein (from Ed Wort's recipe) on 6/17/18. Just kegged it last night (9/25). Tastes very good --I'm impressed. Nice, dry, and clear with a hint of apple. Only to get better with age I assume. I followed Ed Wort's recipe exactly except used LD Carlson Cider House select yeast...

    Wyeast 1098 starter...no activity

Everything went well. Thanks for the advice! I delayed my brewing for one day thinking that would improve cell reproduction. I'm glad I did. One thing I will say, my OG was 1.070, which was expected. I did oxygenate (oxygenation wand) the wort once I added the yeast. Shooting for about a...

    Wyeast 1098 starter...no activity

Yea -- I've been thinking stepping up to a 2L starter. Thanks for the info. I'll check it tonight when I get home. My plan was to brew tomorrow morning, but looks like I may delay at least one more day. Worst case, I can delay until next weekend. I have never used a yeast calculator. I...

    Wyeast 1098 starter...no activity

Made a 1l starter last night, placed on stir plate and checked this morning. I'm not seeing any activity. Or krausen. The date on the yeast was March, so 5 months. Should I be concerned, or is there usually a lag time for the 1098 strain? Thanks for any responses. Rick

    What's in your fermenter(s)?

5 gal of Belgian Strong Dark Ale (jamil zainasheff recipe). It's going to be a good one -- measured 10.5% ABV.

    Taprite Regulator O-Ring Size?

Just replaced Taprite Regulator O-Ring last night. That was definitely the problem, slow leak on the high pressure side. I'm a happy camper now.

    Taprite Regulator O-Ring Size?

Thanks for posting the McMaster Part# -- just ordered some. I think this may be the culprit for a slow leak.

Most annoying response when you tell someone you're a homebrewer?

I'd have to say "Can you brew a Miller Lite?" (or Bud Light, Coors Light). Which kind of reminds me -- I've a friend I've been working on for years to try some crafts beers and also have been introducing him to some "gateway" beers. He'll always say -- "That's pretty good, but I like my...

    Lesson(s) learned from Stuck Sparge

I'll give the Malt Conditioning a try too -- Thanks! Might widen the spacing on my grain mill a couple .002 also.

    Lesson(s) learned from Stuck Sparge

I do have a grain mill (just recently purchased) -- and as a matter of fact this was the first batch I used it on. Mine is set to 0.039" -- do you have a recommended setting? Thanks.

    Lesson(s) learned from Stuck Sparge

That's exactly what I was trying at first (blow out stuck sparge through tube) until I realized it disconnected. One thing I did notice -- the OG was calculated at coming out to 1.044 and and actually came out to 1.060. So -- it's a little higher ABV than anticipated.

    Lesson(s) learned from Stuck Sparge

I have to admit -- I don't always do AG brewing. As a matter of fact, probably more extract (w/Specialty Grain) brewing. But -- trying to frequent more AG brew sessions. Brewed an AG American Amber Ale this weekend (recipe from "Brewing Classic Styles" Jamil Z.). Everything was going great...

Did I Dry Hop too soon?

OK -- will do. Thanks for suggestions!

Did I Dry Hop too soon?

Hello -- Brewed an American Strong Ale on 3/19/16 -- after checking the gravity yesterday and saw that it achieved its FG, I went ahead and dry hopped (first time dry hopping). The recipe calls for dry hopping for 5 days. Is it OK to open the fermenter back up (after 5 days) and remove...

Flip Top Bottles for Bottle Conditioning

I normally keg, but when I brew a big beer, I always use the flip tops. They work great and gaskets are cheap when they need replaced. Since they are initially a little pricier to replace -- I tend to remind individuals to please return empty bottles. :)
