Fridge size needed for 5 Gallons

Search the threads for mini fridge conversions. There are lots. The model numbers change occasionally, but you might find a used one out there. Some of them, you can(carefully) bend the freezer shelf down against the back wall to make room for a carboy. I found a fridgidaire with a removable...

Got a wine aerator for Christmas and a brew tool idea

Happy new year everybody! I got one of those Brookstone wine aerator tools as a gift and the first time I used it, I got an instant idea for a tool. If you've never seen one, the wine aerator is basicly a funnel with two holes drilled horizontally into the downspout. I just need to build a...

"Boil The Hops, Not The Malt Extract" By: Steve Bader

I've got a question for anyone willing to weigh in - If I follow the instructions in the Bader article, and assuming I drop my I.C. at about 10 minutes to flame-out to sterilize, if I dump 5 pounds of DME on top of that, will I be able to stir that well enough to keep the extract from sticking...

    Prepping dry yeast for pitching

My last two batches, I boiled 1tsp. DME in say 3/4 cup water, let it cool to ~77F in the freezer, added my dry yeast and set aside for 2-3 hours before pitching time. First batch fermented okay, but the second had to be repitched after 48 hours of no activity. Is this yeast prep an ill-advised...

    Rinsing out the LME jug

I can't see why it would. It is all going to boil anyway. I always put my cans in a wide shallow pan on a second burner for about a half hour before pouring them(about 170 deg, open the lids). It thins the consistency of the extract and you leave a lot less behind in the can. And I still rinse...

    i poisoned myself

My second batch has some clarity issues, so every bottle has a little sediment. But about three beers I've pulled from the case have had a little blackish clump in the sediment. One of them fizzed like crazy when I opened it, they all smelled really yeasty. When you say "No known pathogen can...

Temperature for fermenting. How much does it matter?

Okay, so if you (ahem) happened to have your brew in a fridge with a digital temp controller on it, and you (ahem) happened to not quite have mastered the settings of said temp controller, and came home one day and found that your beer had been at 78-80 for nearly 24 hours, all this during the...

    Bottling bucket as primary?

Is there any harm in using my bottling bucket as a primary so I can rack to secondary in my carboy?

    percarbonate powder not working

Thanks for the help. Cat22, This stuff I'm using is just a dollar store brand of OxyClean - same active ingredient. I think it is good advice to let it soak, which I didn't. I just scrubbed the inside with a carboy brush, rinsed and repeated. As far as PBW, I will do some research on where to...

    percarbonate powder not working

Following HBT advice, I bought some sodium percarbonate powder for cleaning my gear. I recently finished my second batch, a very hoppy smelling SNPA clone. After cleaning the carboy several times with 4 or 5 tablespoons each pass, I corked it and set it on the shelf for a week. Today it smells...

What is the best mini fridge for a fermentation chamber?

There are a few threads on this. I have heard Sanyo 4912 mentioned a lot. I have a Frigidaire 445 that barely holds a 6 gallon carboy. I mentioned this to someone in a post not too long ago, so like I said, do a search. you should find quite few threads on this question.

    Side-by-Side to Fermentation Chamber Build

Now that this thread has been revived, I've got to ask: After using this for a while did you find the need to add recirc fans to even the temperatures between upper and lower shelves?

    bottling spicket lubed?

I was just cleaning my new bottling bucket and discovered something really greasy, clear and odorless on the inside of the spicket. It is not washing out easily. Is this some kind of lube? I did have a container of StarSan leak in the shipment but I didn't think any got in there.

    Another IMBR? thread

It is a pilsner, which is why I went with the 58 ambient, which is keeping my carboy temp at around 64. The temp has been inching down a little the past week, I guess because the fermentation has stopped. But it has been nearly 4 weeks in primary. OG was 1.058, but haven't taken another reading...

    Another IMBR? thread

Ok, I've got a prehopped batch(my first) that the instructions said add the extract after the boil. I cheated and let it come back to boil before removing it. I cooled it to 70 deg, pitched the dry yeast, waited 24 hrs, nothing, then pitched another, which worked. My Krausen started falling...

    lagering fridge

I bought a Frigidaire FRC445 after measuring the interior and determining that my 6gal carboy would just fit after removing the freezer shelf. This shelf comes out with the removal of one hinge screw - no bending of delicate cooling coils required. But once it was full of liquid, it pressed...

prehopped kit, wort chill question and rookie

MikeG: "You're next step is the kits where you steep specialty grains, add the hops doing a 1 hr boil with a hop schedule. While it may take longer it's not difficult and the quality of your ale's can dramatically improve." That's what I'm looking forward to!

prehopped kit, wort chill question and rookie

Thanks! I have been reading the book on how to do this, but when it occurred to me that what I had was a prehopped kit, I looked back through and found little specific info on them. Then I saw some threads about "no-boil" kits that got me worried.

prehopped kit, wort chill question and rookie

I got a starter kit that included the ingredients of my first batch(Cooper's 1 can prehopped pilsner, 1 can light malt extract, 3/4 cup corn sugar). The instructions say dissolve the ingredients 2 liters boiling water or hot tap water, then mix with 20 liters cold. -Now, I'll boil my water for...

    immersion chiller - alternate design

That is a great design, no doubt. But aren't you worried about sanitation? It seems like the upright support structure has a lot of places for stuff to get trapped.
