    air powered stir plate

Anyone use one of these? Seems like a cheap alternative to a motor driven one, but not as cheap as a homemade one. Looks like it could be driven by a simple aquarium air pump right? http://www.pfstar.com/Air-operated-turbine-magnetic-stirrer-_p_22543.html

Not impressed by beers of the NW

So far that is. I'm travelling around and am in Washington, Seattle to be exact. Here is a rundown of what I've had. Winthrop (schoolhouse) brewery. They had a good stout, coffee stout was average, "ran out" of some other stuff. IPA was thin, like a hop-tea, no mouthfeel at all. B-...

    Widmer Deadlift DIPA

Is this a good example of a double/imperial IPA? Had one the other day and really liked it. Not in a "drink all the time" sort of way, but something I could drink when I want something out of the norm. Just wondering if I should try other DIPA's or stick with widmer.

Free: hops and other stuff (austin, tx)

Nothing spectacular, but stuff I'd rather not throw away if someone can use them: <1oz each of Cascade, Williamette, and Sorachi Ace. They have been frozen in vacuum sealed baggies since April 2009. No guarantee on how much potency is left, but I figure someone can throw them in an IPA and it...

Nine breweries opening in the Austin area.

On the list are nine breweries in the vicinity, (farthest away is SA) which are all in the planning stages. Some are just a website, some actually have equipment and are making pilot batches now. Should be awesome when all is said and done, as competition and choices for beer drinkers can...

512 bourbon barrel aged double pecan porter

512 is a local Austin brewery, so far not bottling. But if you are in the south texas area try them out. They are a little over a year old, and already have a pretty good following here in Austin. Anyways, they put out a special release that is totally divine...

    Brewed up a "RoggenBier" today

Got the AHS RoggenBier. I'm a little skeptical because it only has 1lb of Rye, but AHS hasn't let me down yet. Anyone ever tried it? Put it on a yeast cake from a dunkelweizen, and 2 hours later it's blowing like crazy. That makes me happy. Just though I'd share.

Free Coriander seeds: Austin, TX only

I have a mason jar of coriander seeds. I got it from the Indian section, because a pound of it is like 3 bucks. I brewed 2 Wits with it, and I'm keeping some, but I dont really see myself brewing that much Wit here in the near future. So I don't know, maybe someone wants it. Free. For...

    2 months away from Homebrew

So, me being a teacher, I have the summer off, and have spent the better part of June and July on the road. Unfortunately I couldn't take any homebrew with me. Fortunately, I HAD to sample some of the local offerings, with mixed results. So I've had a weird relationship with my homebrew, in...

    Picked up 3 bombers today

    1) Widmer doublt Alt. Strong. Malty. ehhh, maybe too strong. Got me plenty buzzed. Not great, not bad. Couldn't drink it every day, but a nice venture from my ususal. 2) Lagunitas GnarleyWine. I'll review it later, I'm still not legit after drinking #1. 3) Lagunitas Belgian style...

    Drinkmixer instead of stir plate

I stumbled into one of these things at the store earlier today: Sport Drink Mixer (battery operated) Has anyone had any experience with using something like this to mix up a starter, instead of the stir plate. I would think sanitizing it would be a concern (it uses an impeller) , and it...

    Help with this recipe

I was thinking about doing a Honey Wheat with a little bit of a citrus kick to it. I read about Sorachi Ace hops and their strong citrusy character, so this is what I am thinking: 2.50 lb Wheat Liquid Extract [Boil for 15 min] 2.00 lb Wheat Liquid Extract 1.00 lb Honey 1.50 lb...

    Yeast starter in fermenter

So I have read a few articles/threads on yeast starters. I am really sort of lazy, and dealing with flasks and stirplates and all that seems a little too much for me right now. I have also heard of just throwing a wort on top of a previous yeast "cake". So would it be possible to make a small...

plugging a hole in a glass carboy

I stumbled upon a 5 gallon glass carboy. Problem is it has 2 small holes drilled into it near the bottom. They area about the diameter of a pencil. Is this salvageable? Could I shove a small stopper in each one? Fill it with silicon? Duct tape?!?:drunk:
