    Small Beer from Imperial Stout

DME will certainly help boost the abv of the second beer. I actually used 4 lbs of flaked oats as part of the mash for both and it was still slow to drain.

    Small Beer from Imperial Stout

You can hold some grains back as suggested and add a few lbs to mash for a while longer before the second runnings. Remember to sparge again. It is beneficial to have some rice hulls (which I did not do) or at least a false bottom if not BIAB for laughtering. With so much grain it can be a slow...

    Small Beer from Imperial Stout

Thanks VikeMan! Will wait and take a reading soon.

    Small Beer from Imperial Stout

True. It was fermenting at high temp. But to pitch more or not to pitch? Suppose I have to take a gravity reading first.

    Small Beer from Imperial Stout

Can't see fermentation happening anymore as it is such a dark beer (no Krausen) also no gas noticibly leaving the blow off tube. Haven't taken a gravity reading as I assume the yeast is still working slowly but will do soon.

    Small Beer from Imperial Stout

Just finished brewing an imperial stout and used alot of grain (20+lbs = 5g) that the plan was reuse the grain post mash to make a small stout with a different yeast. This was a week ago, The imperial is doing fine and dandy, slowly chugging along. The small beer (1.04 OG) flocculation seems to...

    Wyeast 1007

WLP036 is supposed to be the equivalent, as it is a Dusseldorf Alt yeast. Other suggest there may be differences and that it may not atttenuate as well leaving a breadier, maltier finish.

    Mixing WLP036 and Wyeast 1007

I'm curious about this as well. Did the beer turn out good? I am planning on making an Alt bier soon (Uerige clone) and have Wyeast 1007 but thinking of adding WLP036 as a booster and to encourage diversity of flavor. Hoping you reply...

    Imperial B51 "Workhorse" mini-review

Just used B-51 in an imperial stout a few days ago. In NY and yes it is the summer so it's fermenting hot like 80-85F. Not mad about getting any Belgian banana ester flavors off of the yeast. Just wondering why it seems to have finished so quick, like three days. I know that the yeast will keep...

    Flavorless beer- why?

Just reading this thread now for the first time. Thankfully read til the end. I was actually going to suggest what you apparently solved. When brewing with my filtered water I usually condition the water with three steps. One brew I forget to add a kosher salt addition of 2g for a 5g batch. The...

    False bottom/screen for carboy?

I agree with using a racking cane in the mouth of the spigot and attaching a muslin bag (tubing not necessary). When I transfer under pressue I attach a muslin bag to the racking can with a zip tie and it keeps yeast and hops at bay, although I am racking from above and can easily adjust the...

    Best Hops for NEIPA

Warrior, Citra, Apollo Or Idaho 7, El Dorado & Belma. I have made beers that didn’t add hops to the boil and when you have a small dose at 60min (14g for 5gal batch) I have found the beer to taste way more complex. Chemically they must help in the 60 minute boil.

    Beer experiment

This is a proven scientific subject and music is now know to change the crystalline structure of water. Here is a short video: There has also been study of thought and prayer on not only water but fermenting rice. The rice with positive thought fermented excellently, the rice with negative...

    Belma Hops

So The verdict on Belma is still not out.... More dislike that acceptance. Although there is a whole lotta love it also seems. Maybe freshness and storage may be the problem. I like it, and find it compliments other hops fantstically (e.g. Warrior, Apollo, Citra) but also found it actually did...

    Belma Hops

Just curious since this thread ends here, how'd the beers turn out? I know it was a while ago.

What hops are ideal for single-hopped PAs/IPAs and WHY?

As previously stated (kinda)... all hops are good. It really depends on your palate. Some people can't stand a particular hop, or love all beer made with another. I brewed a intentionally slightly soured SMASH with Belma which was incredible, not to mention it was 9.5% and drank like a 6%...

    Idaho 7 and Hop Hash

Have been sitting on some Idaho 7 hop hash for a while and finally got around to brewing with it yesterday. Brewed an NEIPA with all late addition hops (20 min or less left of boil). From my research I found that hop hash has a concentrated lupulin level so a little goes a long way. I initially...

    Belma Hops

Hello Jimmy, Never used Belma in anything but an IPA. Belma is a very unusual hop and garners a fair bit on negative attention. That being said it is one that I love and use all the time. I have made a SMaSH with Belma which was great. It also seems that very little about Belma single hop beers...

    Peanut butter or Nutella stout

I can see why people would use denatured oil free peanut powder. I don’t percieve brittle as having too much oil left once baked into a solid state, but perhaps. As far as sugar, that is yeasts friend (food) and as for the small amount of salt, I actually condition my water with more salt than...
