    Cooking Oil vs Fermcap

Wait. Fermcap is simethicone? We give that to our baby in the form of infant gas drops. Lolol

    Aeration

I don’t really aerate anymore. When I transfer the wort from the kettle to the fermenter it splashes a lot though. Must be enough. I’m usually pitching harvested yeast from a previous batch, so I just make certain to use what would normally be a healthy over-pitch. No problems thus far.

More beer all grain kit estimated OG

Yeah I thought it might be bottling volume they were talking about, but it still didn’t add up. I may just make it a 6 gallon batch anyway because I was looking for a somewhat chuggable beer with this one. At least I’m probably not way off anywhere in my entry. Thanks!

More beer all grain kit estimated OG

So I got the berry beer kit (KIT: 431 on their site) from morebeer. It’s an all grain kit with and estimated OG of 1.041-45 for a 5 gallon batch according to the instructions included with the kit. They’re assuming 70% efficiency. The ingredients included are as follows: 10# 2-row 1# white...

    Cool. Thanks.

    New kegger. Couple questions...

So I started kegging recently. Right now I've been keeping two kegs and my co2 tank inside my brew shed fridge, but I'd like to move the tank outside the fridge to make room for a third keg. I'm thinking I'll drill a hole through the side of the fridge, mount the tank next to it, and run a...

    Video games

Been playing a lot of oculus rift games lately. The novelty of it is starting to wear off and I’m left wishing it had higher resolution and a wider field of view though. VR is better than it has been ever before, but it’s not quite there yet I guess. Next I may try the Horizon Zero Dawn...

2 weeks Kettle to Keg to Drinking - Anyone ever try this? I did!

So I just started kegging and I don't see why 2 weeks would even be considered that fast. I kegged my first beer a couple of weeks ago, so of course I wanted to check out the "rock and roll" method just to see how effective it was. I set the regulator at 30psi, rolled the keg on the floor for...

    Neipa

I made something that looked NEIPAish a few months back, but I'm not sure that it qualifies. It had flaked wheat in it because I had some lying around. I used only late and dry hops, but not really in enough quantity for me to think it was really an IPA. Still, the damn thing didn't clear in...

    IPA burnout

I don't have enough experience drinking IPAs to have burned out on them. Most of them I didn't like at first taste, but I've grown steadily more tolerant of them the more I drink my own homebrew. I really do like Bell's Two Hearted. Like a lot.

Can you cold crash for too long?

I cold crashed a strawberry blonde for a week (sunday to sunday) before bottling earlier this year. It wasn't even slow carbonating, not that it mattered as it was a beer for SWMBO, who was pregnant at the time and probably won't finish it until next year anyway. The last taste I had was about...

I brewed today... man am I bushed!

It wasn't that bad for me until I moved up to 10 gallon batches. Then it went from manageable to impossible. I tried mashing overnight inside my shed like usual, and when it came time to move the kettle to the burner outside I found that I just barely could manage it. My new kettle has a...

Mash night before, boil in morning

I think that in terms of shortening the total time you spend brewing, the overnight mash is better than trying to complete a standard mash on day and boil the next. With the overnight mash you get to walk away for the day immediately after doughing in and insulating your kettle. That mash time...

I can't tell it my starter is ok or not.

I did stir it vigorously before putting it in the flask, and it was on a stir plate the whole time. The yeast was allowed a couple of hours to warm up to room temp and the wort was allowed about the same amount of time to cool. It was definitely cool to the touch when I pitched the yeast.

learning lesson from older brew guy

The blowoff went through the blowoff tube AND the airlock.

I can't tell it my starter is ok or not.

I'm using a stir plate. I haven't seen any kind of krausen ring either. The odor I'm detecting isn't reminiscent of any kind of beer or liquor really. I'm afraid the yeast was dead and it's just souring now.

I can't tell it my starter is ok or not.

So I made my first starter Friday from a pouch of wlp001 California ale yeast. It ended up being about 1.25 liters of 1.040 starter wort. I basically followed the instructions from the How to Brew website. Over the next couple of days I checked in on it and I couldn't really tell if anything...

    Grits vs flaked maize

At this point I've made 4-5 batches of the cream of three crops recipe with quick grits or corn flake cereal. They both seemed to work more or less the same even though the cereal had preservatives that I thought might impact the flavor or fermentation somewhat. I don't have any experience...

equipment upgrades you wish you had from the start

My big one is the larger brew kettle. I bought a 5 gal, 10, gal, and now a 20 gallon. Each one has pretty much rendered the previous one useless. I could have saved some dough by jumping straight to the 20 gal, but how was I to know that I would want it in the beginning? Some things you just...
