    Yeast issues and perhaps temperature?

Ok nothing wrong with hfcs. I feed that to my bees. People whine about it a lot saying it is the devil but it is only bad due to the actual amout consumed since it is in everything. In reality it is no worse than sugar in our bodies, neither being the best food source. I have not done any actual...

    I can't believe I did that....

Yet to break a hydrometer but I have broke a few glass jugs and plastic tubes for the canes. Normally due to drinking and brewing related incidents (otherwise known as DBI'S) or drinking while brewing ( DWB'S) The worst incident being when my back gave out (two broken vertebrae) and I was...

    Yeast issues and perhaps temperature?

If you want to be ghetto and check acid/alkaline of liquid look under your fish tank for the paper water testing strips. Pull off a smidgeon of the liquid from top bottom and middle (the readings can vary due to mixing issues) test each one. It will tell you how acidic you 'water' is but don't...

    Recomend Racking equipement ?

It depends on the size. The 20L, which I own, I can easily fit my hand down into it. If it helps I wear size XXL working/baseball gloves but can squeeze into XL rubber gloves at doctors offices lol. Or thi k the opening is slightly larger than a cd rom and yay my pinky fignts the inner hole :P

    Recomend Racking equipement ?

Also I now use a spediel 20L which is great. A few issues it has are: The drain spigot plug can drip over a long periods of time, not much but keep something there. People complain about rough spots inside holding germs, mine has none of these I checked prior to purchase The airlock is a lot...

First time brewing mead. Whats my next step? Do I know just wait?

Don't let it sit in the mud too long. The left one is about where I would rack majority of the time. If you get concerned for air space buy some kids marbles and sanitize them. Use them for adjusting headspace to your preferred spot.

    Fruit fly rescue

My experiences with bread yeast esentially gave me a 1 week tolerance before I started getting annoyed. Some days it goes 'rawr' like my kid with a dinosaur toy, others it is like an old man with 'ED' until it finally starts perking up... if by 1 week it shows no life signs I would rinse and...

    What do you think

Ok racked it 2 hours ago... if you plan to use coconut I Strongly recommend have it in cheese cloth or something other than that. Essentially some coconut falls to the bottom and some stays up top. The bottom huggers will cause issues in suction and a cane pump will start suctioning air from...

    What do you think

About 1 month now and fermentation is slowing down rapidly. It sits currently at 1.012 gravity which puts it at about 13.5% abv. It ofcourse tastes yeasty but doesnt have the over bearing sweetness anymore. I have some in the freezer I am shocking to drop the yeast for a better taste as earlier...

    Starting my First Mead

Sleep in your washing room! Lol. Nah normally you can get a cheapo shrink plastic to cover your windows for winter. Just attach it and hit it with a hair dryer and it clears up and shrinks for fixing the wrinkles. It works decent for the cheap price. Anyways if you keep the yeast in the room...

    Newbie question: pasteurize mead?

Sigh...all these things for inpatient people. Chemicals galore and now more about pasturization (sp?) If you age the mead in bulk for atleast 6 months with air lock on it. You can take hydro readings once a month and if it stays the same the yeast is no longer active due to alcohol suicide or...

    Newbie mistakes?

Fermentation can stick from time to time go get tinder and find someone who likes Netflix ;) and in the words of a great singer, let it be.

    Bottling first mead

Bottle or not bottle is purely up to you and a preference of choice. I bulk age mine until bottling, when my current bottles are empty, and dont concern about age after that. I am an old coot and never really got that burn from whiskey like alot do so even 'hot' mead doesn't have a burn to me...

    Fruit fly rescue

Dont fret too much. Some people actually give two poops during fermentation and get by just fine open tops and all. In the long run a fruit fly can potentially mess up a batch but those usually sit in it over a long period of time. There are many ways to get rid of the flies prior to it and most...

    Filtering during racking

Filtering mead is like washing your car with mud... If you let mead sit long enough to age in bulk it gravity filters without issue and leaves taste elements in the drink a filter may remove or distort. For co2 just get some extra co2 tanks for paintball and get them filled during a day of...

    My first run!

Pineapple juice is fine... people fret too much. If the mix is too 'hot' just cut it with juice when you pour it. It is easier to make things very alcoholic and then mellow it than to try and get you weak stuff stronger. If it is your first time just start a basic mead for a few runs to master...
