    Leaving hops in fermenter?

Thanks all, Only had a sink full of gel packs to cool on, so I suspect it might have taken longer to cool than expected (still done in 1/2 hour). Granted it's my first time with extract, but this came out like the American Pales I've tried in terms of (perceived) IBU. Definitely going to try...

    Leaving hops in fermenter?

So a few weeks back I finally sourced an extract kit supplier here, and went with this: http://www.brewuk.co.uk/summer-glow.html Narrowly avoiding CO narcosis aside brew day went well, but I had to slap it in a pressure barrel and force carb after 3 weeks as finals were interfering with a...

    Water Quality Report

TDS is pretty damn low, so you've got a blank slate there. Guess US water reports are pretty sparse compared to ours: https://www.stwater.co.uk/content/conMediaFile/1640

    That was unexpected...

19 C, calibration's for 20 so it's a point tops. Hydro has a tendency to lean to the edges of the jar (much less than a plastic one though), and it's nearer .044 at the meniscus (assuming you read there on hydrometers). Steep may have been a little high if that'd draw more sugars out, I know...

    That was unexpected...

Managed to get an extract kit so figured I'd give it a shot - 75 minute boil in 6 litres (About a gallon and a half, half my kettle size), little over 2# of DME at the start and the same again after. So steeped, didn't lose much volume (only about 1# of grain anyway) and got it to what I...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Moving up to extract (possibly the last free weekend I'll have for a long time, got finals, grad school application and a 6-day a week job until the summer...) Something summery, Magnum and Citra.

    First extract

I was (over)thinking more along the lines of altering the flavour if they stay in, seeing as dry hopping does, and I tend to leave beers sitting in the primary for about 3 weeks.

    Strange taste AFTER bottle conditioning

If it's that (same issue here) then RO water's a good solution if you live near an aquatics store. I take a jerrycan down every few weeks and that lasts a couple of brewdays if I just use it for making up sanitiser.

    First extract

Thanks, one thing though: What about the hops? Don't I need to remove them?

    First extract

Picked up the parts to match a recipe on one of the UK sites, just not sure how hotside works in terms of process and sterilisation (limited access to RO and a v. small kitchen, less prep I need to do the better). Got muslin for steeping grains, and the recipe looks like you just lob...

    Bottle time/temps?

Long story short I ran my (hopefully) final pre-hopped kit the last few weeks (sat in primary for about 25 days, so much clearer than what I'm used to...) but wanted to practice bottling before moving to extract (got bits for a nice summer IPA on order). It's been a crazy few days with...

    Disinfecting brass

MSDS shows incompatibility with metals, makes sense as you have an acid (hydriodic) in there. FYI strong acid's a common procedure to obtain copper from brass - it dissolves the zinc out.

How to *really* brew can kits?

If you'd consider Virginia Beach close to Richmond, then sure. Probably need to revise my original statement now I've had some more input; there's a lot of mixed terminology form UK sources re: extract/PM/AG, and in terms of gear the brew shops tend to lump all the latter together. Got hold...

How to *really* brew can kits?

Thanks all. Found plenty of suppliers for the malts/hops etc. just not complete kits. I'm too much of a tinkerer to stick with them anyway. Realistically I'd be moving to partial boils at about 2.5gal US. Plugging the numbers in a few calculators I have some ideas, but I'm not sure how...

How to *really* brew can kits?

Issue is that extract kits don't exist here, it's prehopped crap or dropping near $300 on an AG setup (that's what UK prices are like). That said, I was running errands today and saw a cheap stockpot, holds a bit over 3 gallons, should be enough to try experimenting. Wort's basically water...

How to *really* brew can kits?

Thanks Zepth, and yeah, that's pretty much how can kits work, guess it's an English thing. Luckily Nottingham yeast is easy to get and works well for our environment (makes sense, seeing as its birthplace is about 25 miles north of here) Summer could be an issue though, so I'll have a look at...

How to *really* brew can kits?

I realise these are probably heresy on HBT, but I really want to dial everything in before I blow a ton of money on extract gear. I started with homebrew last year, messed about with beer and wine kits before ditching the latter as it's a lot of effort for little yield (don't really have the...

    Other hobbies besides homebrew..

Cooking, gardening, bass guitar, model kits and wargames (esp. ASL). Coding too, though that's more so I can eventually find a job again seeing as Bach degrees aren't worth **** anymore in the UK, doubly so if you're disabled.

    CO2 on secondary?

Thanks, thought that might be the case. Was hesitant to stick it under gas anyway - these things have a nasty habit of slow leaks, but when you're stuck renting in the city bottling is out of the question (as is extract/AG for that matter :/ )

    CO2 on secondary?

Finally got around to doing another batch (switching to 2-can kits) now I've sorted out the issues with StarSan, gravity's at about 1.018 after 5 days and still bubbling a bit so I've got a day or two so sort out the barrel. Last time I used a pressure barrel for secondary I had pressure loss...
