On my third brew, wondering how important fermentation temperature is

If you already have a temp controller and a heating element, just find an old fridge on craigslist for free or cheap. Take out the shelves. I have one I got free from a nieghbor years ago. Looks like crap but it's in the garage so who cares. it works.

    Gas side pin lock leak

Guage only tells you the pressure, which is dependent on temperature, not level, as long as there is any liquid CO2 in the tank. it's only at the very end, when it's all gas, that the guages tells you anything about how much is left in there. But if you are going through 20lbs tanks every few...

    Gas side pin lock leak

I had a leak a few weeks ago. Replaced the gasket and problem solved. Try a slightly thicker gasket then the one you currently use. But in the mean time, until you solve the issue, turn off your gas at the tank when not serving to limit wasting CO.

    2 perlick Flow Control Faucets

So I have been lazy and still have these available. Price negotiable. Make me an offer.

    Vienna Lager Mexican Lager

Yes - I am planning another batch of this recipe, but will be adding rice hulls.

    Vienna Lager Mexican Lager

So I brewed this up and it was absolutely delicious. Only thing I was I had some seriously stuck sparge. Not sure if it was due to the flaked corn. Has anyone else experienced this?

    Waste minimizing hydrometer strategy?

Yep - Haven't used a hydrometer in years. The last time I broke one, I said F it. I have a refractometer that I use on brew day to check my OG. Then once it's in the frementor I don't touch it. I let it go 2 weeks and then I keg it. Always seems to be done.

    Vienna Lager Mexican Lager

I'm gonna give this a go for my next batch. Temps warming up and need a good lawnmower beer.

16 or 22 ounce bottles vs 12 Oz for bottling

Minimal if at all. Haven't bottle in years. But back when I did, I always preferred to bottle into bombers. Didn't notice an impact.

    Keg pressurisation mad thought

Also CO2 is used for carbonation.

    Coronavirus and starsan

I’m sure any of these numbers are highly dependent on other factors such as temperature and humidity. As to what’s realistic in the real world. Who knows?

    Coronavirus and starsan

Thanks for the responses. I didn’t figure 5-star would say it was safe to use even if they know it, due to legal reason. and I’m not so much thinking by about my hands, since washing well for 20 seconds seems to be the best approach. It would be a last resort sanitizer if half the family was...

    Coronavirus and starsan

Just a random thought I had as I have seen store shelves empty of hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes due to Coronavirus panic buying. Does Starsan kill viruses? I’ve got plenty of concentrate I could mix up as a sanitizer if regular cleaners continue to be hard to find. My gut tells me Starsan...

What is the one best change you've made to upgrade your beer quality?

Truth. I used to make silly mistakes all the time due to drinking while brewing. Now my rule is first pour only after the boil is done. Definitely helps.

What is the one best change you've made to upgrade your beer quality?

Fermentation chamber temp control. i am currently experimenting with with fermenting in cronies with spunding valve and no transfer the serving keg to eliminate oxidation. Ferment and serve from same keg.

Strategy on bottling 8 oz of draft beer per day

16 oz soda bottles and carbonate caps. That will keep the O2 out and carbonated. Edit: this assumes you have a source of CO2 like a kegarator.

New brewer always getting higher than expected OG

Are you sure you are actually getting higher OG? Are you brewing extract or AG? Are you taking gravity readings hot? Is your hydrometer off?

New brewer always getting higher than expected OG

Relax, don’t worry. Have a home brew. That gravity though would benefit from more yeast. Add another pack for peace of mind. Better to ovet pitch then under pitch.
