    My first success

Just popped the top on my first bottle of my first brew. I am very happy!! It has a great red color, nice head retention, and good aroma. It's not the best beer I've ever had (will let the rest age longer), but it sure is nice to taste the fruits of my labor. Thanks to all on here to keep...

    Shake up sediment layer?

I have a layer of sediment at the bottom of the bottles just 2 days after bottling. Is this normal? Should I shake the bottles to put it back into suspension?

    Aeration in Siphon Tube

Just bottled my first batch Monday. I read aeration is to be avoided after the primary fermentation. But when I bottled, air kept getting into the siphon tube and would go into the bottle as it was filling. Will this reduce/halt carbonation? Thanks.

    White particles in carboy

My first batch has been in the secondary fermenter for about a week now. Today I noticed white particles (resembling dust) very slowly falling down the inside of the carboy (could only see it w/ a flashlight though). There's a lot of it at the bottom. Please tell me this isn't mold?!? Also...

    Plug for Great Fermentations

I ordered a Brewer's Best kit (American Cream Ale) from Great Fermentations Saturday night. It is already here on Tuesday, w/ standard shipping. If anyone is around Indiana, I'd recommend this store. Or you can just order off their website. The workers there are really nice and the prices...

    Assumptions, are they correct?

Just racked my first batch into the 5 gallon carboy today. Here are some observations I made and some assumptions. What do you all think? 1). From the primary, the beer (a red ale) had the look of a cappuccino. I assume this is that hazy, cloudy look everyone talks about and the secondary...

    5 gallons for every beer?

Just a general question. Every one I talk to says to boil 6 gallons of water, because you'll lose about a gallon along the way. Is that just the standard for beer kits?

    Steeping for English IPA?

Anyone know if the kit of Classis English IPA from Brewer's Best requires steeping?

    Sanitation and Taking FG

I'll be taking a FG reading in a few days, but I'm wondering what the best way (i.e. the most sanitary) to do this will be. In Palmer's book "How to Brew", he suggests taking a turkey baster and drawing some liquid up and putting into a jar. Your thoughts? But won't this expose the wort to a...

    Hi all

Hello everyone. Just got into the hobby 2 days ago and have already brewed my first batch of Red Ale (that was definitely a blast!!!). It's fermenting in the cellar as I type.
