    Odd smelling fermentation

Ok, that's what I'm smelling then so I guess that's normal. Wow, amazing to think good beer (hopefully?) comes out of that haha

    Odd smelling fermentation

I just Brewed a honey wheat ale yesterday and checked the carboy a bit ago, and there is a downright weird smell coming from it. I'm not sure if it's a possible contamination, or just the way this yeast (wyeast 1010 American wheat) ferments but would like to know what everyone else's...

Yeast choice for a "raisiny" brown ale

Oh, ok. For some reason I had thought that certain strains would give that raisiny flavor profile. Didn't realize that was solely based on grain selection. Luckily I have a pound of the Belgian special B already for the recipe. Thanks!

Yeast choice for a "raisiny" brown ale

I want to make a brown ale using flaked oats and make it reminiscent of an oatmeal cookie, so I wanted to find a good yeast that may give that raisiny character. Any suggestions? I feel like I've read that the English ale yeast strains will work for what I'm looking for, just not sure if any one...

    Best option for fermentation

It's funny you mention this- I just added both to my Amazon cart for next brew so I don't have to worry about this in the future. Only about $60 and I'll have consistent temps.

    Best option for fermentation

Ok, it hit about 75-76 for probably close to 8 hours before I realized how high the temp was, is that long enough at a high enough temp to do any serious damage? This would have been maybe a little over 48 hours into fermentation

    Best option for fermentation

So I'm not sure the best location to use for fermenting my beer. If I keep in in my basement, the temp is gonna keep it in the low 60's, but if I move upstairs into my house the temp jumps up to about 76-78 when cementing(using wyeast American ale yeast). I would think the lower temp may be...

How do I determine the amount of sparse water to use

Just as the title says, I'm trying to determine how much spare water I should use. The grain bill is as follows: 15lbs 2 row 1lb caramel 20l The OG of this brew is supposed to be 1.089 and I had added 6.25 gallons of water for my mash. Thanks!

    Question about BIAB method

I was going to attempt this brew Saturday, but I'm looking at these calculators and I'm wondering what is meant by "mash thickness"? How do I determine that?

Flavor difference of extract v. All grain pre packaged kits

Has anyone ever ordered the same pre packaged kits from an online site(like northern Brewer) in extract and all grain versions before? Just wondering what the taste difference would really be. Want to order the Hopslam clone from NB but this would be my first foray into AG and it seems like so...

    Question about BIAB method

I want to try all grain, and this seems like a decent segue way into that without having to purchase a lot of extra equipment. I want to try and brew a Hopslam clone, but it calls for 16 lbs of grain. My question is what size kettle would I need for this? I know my 5 gallon likely isn't going to...

    Best place to purchase ingredients

What's the best and most reasonably priced placed to purchase grains, hops, yeast, etc.? I've been using northern Brewer for my last few batches and have no complaints to speak of, but was just wondering what other options are out there I'm not aware of.

    Should I pitch another packet?

So concerned at this point about what I should do with this beer. I went ahead and pitched another yeast packet on Sunday, it's now Tuesday morning and my gravity reading is still sitting at 1.030. The beer can't be done, but I don't really know how to jump start fermentation again. Any suggestions?

    Should I pitch another packet?

So, does that mean that my ABV is actually 3.93 instead of 2.75?
  15. R

    Should I pitch another packet?

Yes, I have a refractometer but it's calibrated for my salt water tank (to many hobbies lol) so I've taken my readings with a hydrometer

    Should I pitch another packet?

So I gave it a light stir.... Hopefully that won't oxidize it too much and will help getting going again

    Should I pitch another packet?

Would stirring the wort help or hurt at this point?

    Should I pitch another packet?

So, it's now going on 4 days since brewing and I'm not seeing any fermentation occurring, what should I be doing at this point?

    Should I pitch another packet?

Yooper, a bit off topic but I hear great things about an oatmeal stout recipe you created. I'm not quite ready for all grain but was wondering if there's an extract version? Would like to make that with my next batch.
