    I hate bottling!

Well, the bread yeast seems to have worked. Tried out a bottle today ( 6 days after bottling) and it's carbing up pretty good. No mold or any other nasties indications. Maybe another week and the carbing will be perfect.

    I hate bottling!

Actually, at first I didn't mind it; but the last few batches it really dragged on me. With my work keeping me more busy at the moment, plus other things, the bottling got relegated to "next weekend". Then the next, then the next. The brewing itself I still enjoy. I think a better/more...

    I hate bottling!

I didn't have a chance to get to the homebrew shop, and wanted to get this bottling project over and done with; Fleischman's bread yeast was all my local market had; so I figured yeast is yeast, all it's for is carbonation in the bottle.

    I hate bottling!

This is partly a rant/ partly a question. I've found I *reeeeeaaaaaly* hate bottling. Takes such a long time, is very boring, and it's just to me the absolute worst part of brewing. In fact, I finally bottled my Christmas beer I brewed back in August (yes, in late February). Just couldn't...

First Mead - A question or three

First Mead - A question or three

Just racked to secondary my first mead, a Midwest dry mead kit, used Red Star pasteur champagne yeast. Just a few mead newbie questions - - The directions say to let it sit in secondary for 3 -4 months. What would happen if I bottled it after, say, a month or two, and let it sit in the...

    Bottling Almost-Accident! & Q

Yep, didn't even think of "sanitizing" my hands. Just washed with dish detergent & water & went for it. Damn....Now I'm scared!! Hopefully the alcohol will kill off any bad bacteria? I tried wrapping some old cloth around the gasket area, to no avail. It was dripping something fierce...

    Bottling Almost-Accident! & Q

Well, I got everything cleaned & sanitized to bottle some Caribou Slobber I had sitting in the glass carboy for 3 weeks, mixed in the sugar water, turned on the spigot at the bottom & wooooosh! A huge leak in the gasket! I tried filling a few bottles, and figured, well, this isn't going to...

First brew - went all wrong!

If this was your first - ever brew, why not just brew a Belgian clone extract kit from one of the big brands? It makes things MUCH MUCH simpler, everything is measured out, and all you have to do is just follow the directions.

yeast recco for milk chocolate stout

Hello, Planning on brewing a milk chocolate stout in a few days, wondering what type of yeast would be best to bring out the chocolate flavor & the creaminess of the lactose? I was considering Wyeasts' 1084 Irish Ale (& White Labs equivalent) 1187 Ringwood, 1099 Whitbread, 1469 West Yorkshire...

What would happen if I brewed a batch that was nearly all sugar?

I loved Zima! Guess I'm the only one??

How long does it generally take for a beer to carbonate in the bottle?

I've had beer carbonated within a week. My personal guess for the "three week" time which seems to be written in stone is that the beer tastes better, has had plenty of time to carbonate, and..... well that's about it. And what's wrong with flat beer? Go to England & have a "real ale", it's...

added fruit to secondary - sanitation question

Thanks! I did read alot about soaking peels/fruit in vodka overnight then adding; I don't have any vodka on hand, and didn't feel like driving out 10 miles to the liquor store for some, so thought the sanitized water solution should be good enough. Plus, the alcohol in the beer already should...

added fruit to secondary - sanitation question

hi, I brewed up a cream ale recently, 2 weeks in the plastic fermenter, than racked to secondary, put 1 oz isinglass and zest/peel from 1/2 a lemon into the secondary. Cleaned/sanitized the carboy, and soaked the peel in sanitizing solution for 10 minutes. Did not add the solution, just the...

    yeast pitch temp

Question - On the packet of Safale 05 yeast, all the instructions I can find say to pitch at 80 degrees F. What if the ambient temp of the room is above 80, like in the summertime with no AC? Should the wort be chilled to below the ambient temp of the room? I don't really want to turn the AC...

    Chilling wort in freezer

Thanks for the replies - I had imagined it would be quicker than an ice bath in the kitchen sink, but I'll stick with that till I can get a snake wort chiller.

    Chilling wort in freezer

Just did a brief search, and couldn't find anything specific on this, but would there be any problems with cooling boiled wort in a regular freezer/refrigerator?

    moved - Sorghum extract recipe

Hello, After having tried a few extract kits, and having had some success with them, I thought of trying to make a few sorghum beers. I have a setup for 5 gallons, but I'd like to brew only 1 gallon at a time - just so I can experiment more with less volume. My inspiration for this...
