    Your worst brewing related injury

I've burnt my fingers on hot kettle handles before but this one takes the cake. Borrowed a friend's counterflow chiller rig for a 10 gallon batch. There are two valves, one to backflush and the other to engage the water to cool. Asked another friend which valve to open and I opened the wrong...

Ever have a capper wear out?

The red baron capper I bought over 2 years ago doesnt seem to be crimping very well anymore. The crown doesnt wrap around the bottle's lip like it used to. As a result of this my last few batches that I bottled wont carbonate all the way. Is this possible or am i just goin nuts?

    Re-using lambic bottles

I have a bunch of various bottles that contained a lambic or other wild ale. Would a hot water+oxiclean bath be sufficient enough to clean the bugs out? A thorough rinse and starsan would of course follow. Also, I have some belgian corks and cages coming. Does anyone know if the corks in lambic...

Some guys from my homebrew club are planning on a 50 gallon batch. There is already argument over the yeast needed. I looked on mrmalty.com and it says we should have a starter of 7.6 gallons with 7 vials of yeast in order to get enough viable yeast. The other guys think that making a 1...

Went to hook up a line to sample an IPA last night, and the plastic pin on the liquid out disconnect was bent. Pushed it down on, wouldnt lock and just sprayed beer all over my face and fridge. I think the bent pin was the problem for it not locking on and instead giving me a face full of...

Getting water ready the night before

On thursday my friends and I are gonna wake up extra early and brew 12 gallons of an IPA. My plan is to measure out the strike water the night before so I can wake up and start heating it right away. He seems to think the water will be "stagnant" and not good for brewing. I think its fine...

How much deadspace should I expect in a keggle?

Installed a weldless fitting in my keg today, with a pickup tube shown in the pic. Filled it up with some water past the valve and drained to see how much was left. To my surprise there was quite a bit of water left in the keggle. I guess this will be trub/hop **** after the brew. link to...
