    Are Hops an Invasive Species?

They are invasive through spreading underground. They can be controlled by digging them up. The crown will get bigger and bigger with time. The can be divided and rhizomes planted elsewhere. You can also give them away to friends. They are actually very beautiful plants when grown on some type...

    Kettle Size

You could easily do 7 gallon batches in a 15 gallon kettle.

I want to start BIAB but I a Noob and don't know what I'm doing!!

Always get a bigger kettle than you think you will need. Try to leave at least two inches or more of space between wort and the top of kettle before the boil. I do 6 gallon batches with my 10 gallon kettle but it is very close to the top. I wish that I would have purchased a 15 gallon kettle...

How many gallons brewed in 2020

2020 just started. I think you mean 2019. I brewed 90 gallons of beer in 2019. So far in 2020 I have brewed 6 gallons.

    Gas burner

Make sure that you use the appropriate fuel with the burner that you purchase. They are either for propane or natural gas. Not both fuels.

    Gas burner

You should look into jet burners. You may need more than one. They come in various sizes. See link below.

    Confession Time

I must confess that since brewing for over four years, I have used my hydrometer once and have never used it since. I really don't see the point in using it, as the beer will be the same regardless of what my readings are. Also, I never use a wort chiller. I simply place the pot in a large...

    2015 Hop garden photo thread

I have already picked some hops from my Columbus and Willamette plants. Here are some pictures taken on July 6, 2015. The hops in the collander are Columbus just picked today.

    Building A Copper Wort Chiller

This looks all fine and dandy, but wort chillers require at least 50-60 gallons of water. I am able to chill my wort with only 25-35 gallons of water with cold water in a tub. Sure it may take up to an hour but everything turns out just fine with out wasting an extra 30 gallons of water. I...

    Bringing Costs Down...

I do BIAB. I have a ten gallon kettle and a homemade voille bag. I use a five gallon bucket with holes drilled into the bottom to drain the bag after the mash. This bucket is set on top of the kettle on a grate while I sparge about two additional gallons of hot water thru the bag. After the...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2014?

I brewed 14 six gallon batches in 2014. One of these was a Graff which I bottled exclusively. Everything else were ales or stouts which I kegged five gallons and bottled the remainder. So, my grand total for 2014 was 84 gallons.

    Hops in bulk? (Canada)

I think it may actually be more cost effective to puchase from Adventures in Homebrewing in the United States. By the way, they have hops rhizomes for pre-order on sale now, so you can grow your own hops. www.homebrewing.org

    1st BIAB issues/questions

Try to stir the mash more frequently to keep mash temperatures more consistent. This is especially important in the first half hour or so, when most of the starch conversion is taking place. I try to stir every 5 minutes or so during that first half hour. As far as the over shoot on the...

    Mesh size?

Go to the fabric store and get a couple yards of polyester voile material. It is about $3.00 per yard. Have someone who can use a sewing machine make the bag so it will fit just right on your mash/boil kettle. This is the very best material to use as the mesh is very fine and the finished bag...

    How Do You Aerate?

I have a plastic tee with a short hose that I connect to my racking cane. This creates the venturi effect and then the wort falls a foot or so into the fermenter. After I pitch my harvested yeast slurry, I seal the fermenter and shake it for about one minute. This seems to be more than...

    Bottle a couple...keg the rest

I do this all the time. I usually ferment a 6 gallon batch and bottle about one gallon or so from the primary. I then rack the rest into a secondary which I will keg two weeks later. This way if my keg kicks, I have some back up beer in bottles. Works for me. As for carbing the bottles, I...

    Sanitizing a racking cane?

Rinse the outer tube with hot water immediately after use, do the same with the tubing. Then run some Starsan thru the racking cane. I also run Starsan thru again just prior to use.

    Noob question

Do yourself a favor and just get a bigger pot (10 or 15 gallon). You will be glad that you did in the long run.

Storing a keg filled with starsan?

First of all, you only need about 2 cups of Starsan to sanitize a keg. Just put it in and slosh it around a few times and let it sit for 5 minutes then dump it out. I store my Starsan in one of those 5 gallon Gott drink dispensers.
