"Why the heck didn't I think of that before" Category

my aha moment was after I was tired of searching for a way to hook my chiller to the faucet. Its a newer style and couldnt find the fittings. I went to lowes and got a submersible pond pump, hooks right up to the chiller and i put it in a bucket of ice water or the left side of my double sink...

    Homebrew facepalms

I have a couple to add: - I was making my first batch of all-grain using BIAB; I heated up a metal pot of 2 gal sparge water to put through my grain. I poured a small bit of water through the grain and then set it down to let it drain; and picked the hot pot up the second time without the...

    New Kettle Time

One other thing I didnt think of before going BIAB was that I bought an 8 gallon megapot 1.2 and I love it, however I got the thermometer and ball valve option. The bag seems to hang up on the probe, and I would like to use a fryer basket but it doesnt submerge enough so I just line the pot...

    Official Broken Hydrometer Count

1174, and maybe 1175. So when I brewed my last batch my hydrometer was in its cylinder and got knocked over...it broke so thats the first one. Tonight I was bottling and took an FG reading with the second one I had and it seemed way too low, like 1.003 or so. I put that hydrometer in some 62...

BIAB - 5 gallon batches in 9 gallon kettle

I have the 8 gal megapot with valve and thermometer..the last batch, my second, had a 13lb grain bill. Because I bought 3 2.5 gallon containers of spring water from the store, I put 5 gallons in the meagapot and the other 2.5 in my 5 gal pot. I was at the 7 gal mark during the mash; I dunked...

    Faucet Connection for Wort Chiller

A plus benefit is that when the wort gets to around 85 or so the faucet water is much less effective, with the submersible pump you can run supercooled ice water through it! Edit: this is the one I bought: http://m.lowes.com/pd/smartpond-500-GPH-Submersible-Pump/3044404
