    3/8" or 1/2" wort chiller

I am looking at upgrading my 25' stainless wort chiller to a 50' and wondering if it is worth the extra money to go with 1/2" tubing? I use a Keggle for my boil pot and plan on doing 10Gal batches in the future as well.

Snow Day Clone - help with hops

I am very interested in hearing how this turns out. I bought a 12pack of Snowday last night and love this stuff, my first thought was how to clone this. Please report back on how it turns out and how the side by side taste test goes. :)

    mash now,,,,, boil later???

Okay, so even the boil 24 hrs later even though it would kill all that bacteria there would be a potential change to the wort? I am normally brewing IPA or APAs. I was assuming that any nasties that formed in that 24hrs would be killed when I did the boil.

    mash now,,,,, boil later???

I was wondering if there is any potential issue if I were doing a 5 gallon AG batch and only had time to mash out to my full boil volume and then postpone the boil portion of the brew day for 24 hours? It seems like I would be able to brew more often if I could do it like this, find those...

Best way to keep keezer from freezing?

Which controller are you using for this? I am in the same situation. I have a chest freezer that has not been converted with the keezer collar. I currently use a basic freezer/fridge controller with the dial you turn to set the temp. I live in ND and now my freezer/keezer is getting too cold. I...

Purpose of boiling 90min vs 60?

Purpose of boiling 90min vs 60?

I am put together a grain bill to clone Lakefront IBA. I went off the data sheet from the all grain kit sold on NB. It states in the data sheet "Lakefront recommends a 90 min boil for this recipe, making the first hop addition with 60 min remaining". The hop bill for this is 1 oz. Columbus...

Propane saftey - running burner in garage

I was worried about carbon monoxide levels in my garage due to running my propane burner in the garage in the winter months. Actually what I do is have the garage door all the way open and have the burner at the edge of the inside portion of the garage. I am fairly confident I am not going to...

Brewing outside when it is below freezing

Awesome! I love this idea. I brew in a keggle so hauling that bugger into the house would be hell to chill from faucet with thread adapter running the IC. I am going to find a submersible pump and a keg tub. Can't wait to give that a try. As far as mashing and doing my boil, I thought it went...

Brewing outside when it is below freezing

I use and immersion chiller. I don't have an insulated garage, no floor drain, no nothing. I have to hook up the garden hose to the spigot on the front of the house to run the IC which I was then draining the outflow into spare 6.5 Gallon brewing buckets. Will I still get the cold break action...

Brewing outside when it is below freezing

For any of you that brew in the North Dakota or Minnesota neck of the woods, what do you do for chilling your wort? I had to thaw out my garden hose in a warm tub of water just so I could run my chiller, then so i didn't get a huge sheet of ice in the driveway I collected all the water coming...

Hydrometer cracked, garbage or still good?

I was cleaning off my hydrometer today and was holding it too tightly at the top. The glass cracked pretty good from the top down about an inch and curves back up. I am actually surprised it didn't break the tip right off. Well anyways, I am guessing it is only a matter of time before it bumps...

    Las Vegas Microbrews

I would suggest Ellis Island. It is not right on the strip. We actually walked there one day and we were staying at the Wynn for a work conference. They have tall beers for $1.50. We drank the Oktoberfest, it was great! I guess Ellis Island has a great BBQ joint too! Have fun.

    Dry hopping with pellets

Ok, great. Thanks for the replies. I will just dump in the hoppy goodness.

    Dry hopping with pellets

I am looking at dry hopping for my first time. I plan on racking to secondary and adding 2oz of cascade pellets. Is there any advantage to pulverizing the pellets first versus just dumping in the pellets as is? I just picture a clump of pellets sitting at the bottom of the carboy. I thought if...

Make wort, pitch yeast next day?

Okay cool, I will research the no chill method. I would still want to cold crash the wort with my I.C. right? Of course, that sounds counter-intuitive to the method. ha ha.

Make wort, pitch yeast next day?

I was wondering if there would be any downside to brewing up a 5 gal batch of wort (allgrain) and pitching the yeast later, say 24hrs...48hrs...+ The only reason I thought of this was I was about to have a brew session and realized I didn't have any yeast for the weekend. I thought about...

    Smashing Pumkin Ale

I am looking into doing my first pumpkin beer and wondering if you would leave out the pumpkin because you couldn't taste it anyways or because you didn't like the taste it added?

How cheaply/inexpensivly can you brew 5 gal

What blows me away is the savings on grain. If I buy per pound Rahr 2 Row it is 1.34/lb, but if I get a 50lb sack it is 35.99 or .72/lb. This is huge! Then if I start reusing yeast I am darn near cutting my costs in half. I will have to look into buying hops in bulk as well. Dang, if I can save...

How cheaply/inexpensivly can you brew 5 gal

So I brew mainly APA, IPA style 5 gallon batches. I am now planning on buying my base malts in bulk and start reusing yeast. Do you think I can get down to $15 / 5 gal batch? How low can you guys get per batch? What are some ways to save here and there besides buying bulk base malt and reusing...
