dark lager

We're going to a private beer competition/party tomorrow. Most of the people there are not very beer savvy. The theme is lagers. Personally, I think of most lagers as relatively boring(ducks). Can anyone recommend a complex lager, preferably dark and moderately hoppy, that I can get a 6...

    short airlock

I have a recently converted fridge for fermenting set to 68F. If I can find a short airlock, I can have one gallon batches stacked two high. (On one side only. I usually do 5 gallon batches, but have some test meads in the works. Is there a way to have a jug airlocked without the extra four...

    valuable refrigerator space

we just bought a new fridge and put the old one on the front porch for a dedicated fermenting/lagering chamber. currently i have it set to 68F with a PID controller with a mead and a cider in it. the freezer is at about 38 and i'll use that for storing yeast and hops and keeping a few beers...

    berliner weisse - which brett?

there was a recent club judging here on sour beers and a berliner weisse won. i was so impressed that i want to make some. i got his recipe. it is an extract using brett C. brett C is generally seasonal and our local brew shop won't have it until spring. it is available by mail from a few...

    Storing empty bottles

I don't have room indoors, so have been storing recycled empty bottles on shelves in the carport(no exterior walls). The last time I bottled, I had to clean out all the bottles. Rinsing off exterior dust was just annoying, but I had to carefully peer into the bottles to look for interior...

    wooden paddle

a friend of mine is making a wooden brewing paddle for a friend of his. it is more as a sentimental item than practical as far as i can tell. he is going to carve it with some kind of runes or symbol of a brewing god(yet to be determined). i'm not sure if it is for the mash or fermenting...

    Easy SG management

Right now I have my third AG batch sparging. I haven't calculated my efficiency or started using any software yet and it occurred to me that there might be a simpler way to deal with this. My recipe is for a final wort volume of 6 gallons at a specific OG, 1.062. The preboil will be a...

    CO2 tank

i finally found the old CO2 tank a friend gave me. how can i tell what capacity it is? it is about 5" dia and 15" high to the threads. and more importantly, how can you tell if it's empty? it has no tare wt like on a propane tank. it has some gas in it, but i can't tell how much.

    hops - heat - damage

i just got a UPS shipment from a fairly large brew supplier who shall remain nameless until they have a chance to address this issue. the box was handed to me by the UPS driver. I opened it up and ten ounces of hops were in a paper bag. they were in sealed vacuum bags, but they were all in a...

    sloppy seconds

my wife was out of town for the weekend, i got bored and did three batches. friday night i disposed of an old pilsner partial grain kit. i put in fresh hops, belgian yeast, coriander and orange zest. i'm calling that one a belgian pilsner, about as much of an oxymoron as polish reggae, but...

    stale hops

i have a few "brewer's best" box kits that have been on the shelf for a few months. i didn't know about hops freshness until later. now i am replacing the hops with fresh ones. the hops are all still sealed in their vacuum packs and in the refrigerator now. can they still be used for bittering...

    hops extract

i would like to be able to adjust hops aroma and/or bitterness after fermentation and bottling(or kegging). have a few extract kits that have been sitting around for a few months before i thought to pull out the hops and refrigerate them. i didn't know any better. this would explain why most...

    serving temps

on the way home last night from our local monthly interclub judging, my wife said she thought that my altbier should have been served colder. my preference is to always drink colder than the recommendations, but that's just me, so i deliberately chilled it just a bit and carried in a cooler...

    rooting cuttings in water

they said it couldn't be done, but i've now had 3 cuttings, about 6 inches long in a small water container in a north windowsill. in a week or two, a nice system of white roots appeared. the first one didn't survive transplanting. will report.

    bottles for competitions

most competitions do not allow bottles with any identifiable caps or embossing, right? i was bottling today and, just in case i decide to enter some of this swill, was looking for some plain bottles. most of what i found in my recycle bottle box had embossing on them. michelob and sam adams...

    Extract Checklist

after several incidents of running around looking for stuff with the timer running, i made up this checklist of steps and stuff. i have now tested it on a brewing campout, where i had to take EVERYTHING with me to the woods. this is based on using Brewer's Best partial grain beer kits...

    mash tun manifold - CVPC

i just made this 5 gallon mash tun, copied straight from our local brewing supply store's equipment. pics i've already had feedback that it should be smaller so it doesn't get too close to the walls to prevent channeling.

How to go from Extract to AG for < $10.00

(them's prolly aussie dollars) in my research on AG, i came across this: The Brewing Network • View topic - How to go from Extract to AG for < $10.00 probably controversial, but a slightly easier way to make the jump to AG. basically the same way i've been doing extract kits with...

    No-boil vs extract

I've made a few extract kits(Brewer's Best) and have been pretty happy with the process. However, I recently heard about no boil kits that take about 1.5 hours compared to 4 for brewing and look to be less messy and involved. I plan to still do extract and may move up to all grain...

    Calculating Final Abv, after bottling

i just bottled a russian imperial stout (brewer's best brand extract kit). according to the recipe, it should yield 7 - 8% calculating ABV from SG before bottling gives 5.8%, but how do i calculate final ABV? i added 5 oz priming sugar to the five gallon batch.
