Best material to replace glass fridge shelves with to support cornys?

I'm using a full-size all-fridge kegerator, with shelves 24" wide. I removed the glass ones and am using 1/2" plywood, but I'm nervous about putting two full corny kegs on them. I've done two full 2.5 gal kegs and I'm nervous doubling that weight. The fridge has those little notches on the...

What do I need to add to Reverse Osmosis water for homebrewing?

I'm thinking of switching to RO water for homebrewing (long story), but I figure I need to add things to the water to make it best for brewing. What do I need to do? Is there a rule of thumb here with this? Thanks.

Has anyone modified a Speidel fermenter spigot/valve that can be adjusted to pull above trub?

The Speidel fermenters are great. HDPE, large top opening for easy cleaning, handles, transparent enough to easily see levels inside, etc. But the spigot is not great. I've had them leak, there's no tubing size that fits over the end, and it is positioned so low that they grab trub and...

Cider with crushed fruit added - any problem leaving fruit in fermenter for months?

I have a small keg system (4 x 2.5 gallon kegs) an am thinking about making a large 5-gallon batch of fruit cider. The recipe calls for adding the fruit (few pounds of berries, previously frozen) for about a week before kegging. Would it be a bad idea to do the recipe, and pull HALF the...

Looking for immersion heat element (120v) like this.

I'm looking to build a cheap sparge water heater from a stainless vessel (probably iced tea dispenser) and a 120v heating element. I don't want to drill holes so I'm hoping someone has seen an immersion heating element like the pic I've attached (that's from Australia) - I especially like how...

Holidays coming up, I'm not alone in wanting to share my beer. Help me fill growlers!

I've got a kegerator setup utilizing Perlick 630SS taps, and I've got a growler filler insert and tubing for it. But it always makes a huge mess and I feel like the beer is a bit flatter when I'm serving it. What are the tips and tricks here? Add more carbonation a week before filling...

CO2 in the fridge - are readings accurate?

So I found quickly not to panic when checking on the CO2 tank the next day after a refill - the temperature made the regulator think it was much less full than it was. That makes sense to me. My question is - does the PSI gauge on the outlet also need to be adjusted for temperature? Here's...

Some of my brews take on an unwanted woody/alcohol taste

I'm now on my second batch that's had this weird flavor I can only describe as as if it were mixed with a barrel-aged liquor of some sort. Any idea what would cause that?

I've got cacao nibs and vanilla beans in vodka, but it doesn't smell good

Last night I put nibs and scraped/choppped vanilla beans into vodka to soak for a few days. This morning I checked on it and it really doesn't smell that great. Is that normal? I thought it would smell pretty amazing. I'm getting scared to add it to my beer.

Tired of the clip on thermometer in my kettle. Ideas?

I do 2.5-3 gallon batches and brew in a 6 gallon kettle (Bayou 24 qt). I've been using one of those generic 11" long thermometers with the clip that you can attached the side of the kettle. I use the thermometer three times during the process - mashing, sparging, and cooling the wort. During...

Ack - Speidel plastic fermenter can't get lemon smell out!

I brewed a lemon blonde and the vessel just smells so strongly of lemon now! I did a hot PBW soak, a hot water soak with a full box of Arm and Hammer, and now I'm out of ideas. Ack! Edit - I'm going to dry a splash of bleach in a fermenter full of hot water and let that sit for another 30...

How long does racking take you?

I'm using a stainless racking cane and it took forever today to rack ~ 2.5 gallons from the carboy to the keg. Like ... 10-15 min? Felt like an eternity. Is that a normal amount of time? That's 20-30 min for a full 5 gal batch?

Two sensors (for two fermenters) STC-1000?

Can you run two sensor probes? I'm planning on setting up my fermentation chamber with 2 maybe 3 carboys in there, and wondering how you monitor temps in all of them with the STC-1000? Or do you just check one carboy and assume they're all in the ballpark?

How much weight can glass fridge shelves take?

Full size fridge kegerator - I've got 3 gal corny kegs, two on a shelf and no issues yet. Another shelf has a 5 gal fermenter cold crashing right now. Seems okay....But I'm nervous. Am I playing with a ticking time bomb? What's the easiest way to do a simple shelf system in there if I elect...

Wanted: Porter recipe with vanilla beans, cocoa nibs, and coffee

My wife isn't super fond of hops but wants a dark beer. I bought some cocoa nibs, and vanilla beans, and she's a coffee fanatic so I figure it all would go well together. Chocolate Java porter kind of thing, or a sweet stout. Something like that. Any good recipes with those three...

Beer in fermenter - is gravity same at different areas?

Just wondering if the gravity is the same throughout the carboy. Or does the alcohol sink to the bottom so to get an accurate gravity would you need to stir the beer or take multiple readings from different areas? Just curious on this.

Shortest airlock? And do Speidel fermenters block UV?

Two q: 1) What's the shortest airlock you can get? I'm looking into a small chest freezer as a fermentation chamber, but the "step" on the bottom of them means that one carboy will be 8" higher than the other and won't fit with a standard airlock. Is my only option to go with a blowoff on...

Possible to use metal Lunch Box as stir plate casing?

I bought a neat metal lunch box to use as my stir plate case. Then I realized that I'm dealing with magnets and metal might not work at all. I already bought the popular speed-control Thermaltake fan, a 1000ml pyrex and a 1 1/8" stir bar. Can this project be salvaged with a metal case? Thanks.

Has anyone compared root beer extracts?

I want to make root beer and would love to know if people love/hate some of the easily available extracts, like Zatarain's, McCormick, etc. Thanks.
