    Mixed style recipe critique

I went to my lhbs and picked a few malts that I thought would taste good together. I really like a good biscuity and bready malt profile so that was my inspiration. This is also the first batch I used my homegrown Willamette hops on. This is my first recipe I created and wasn't following any...

    Does rain flush out fertilizer?

Over the last week here in southern Indiana we have got somewhere around 9 inches of rain. Its been rediculous really. I was just curious if all that rain has saturated the ground enough and washed away the fertilizer I put on my hops. I used a triple 10 garden fertilizer and some miracle...

Will my damaged bine sprout new bine?

We had a pretty mean hail storm over the weekend and one of my bines on my 2nd year Willamette got broke off. I have read somewhere that a new bine will sprout from the closest node to the break and become the primary? Does that sound possible or will I just train a new shoot?

Im in southern Indiana and we are going to be getting some severe storms thru the next few days with some hail possible. I have my hops already trained and they are about a foot up the ropes so far. Should I put something over them to protect them?

    Replanting trimmed hop shoots?

I trimmed back my first growth from my 2nd year Willamette hops and I have seen somewhere on here that ppl put those shoots in beer bottles of water and got some nice looking roots. I was wondering if there's a certain way to do this? Or just have the shoots cut end in the water to grow a new...

How many bines to sting per crown?

I have a second year Willamette the has about 20 chutes and I want to train with 2 sets of 2 chutes. 2 on one string and 2 on another. Is that gonna put too much stress pulling energy for 4 chutes all year? I could also run 4 different strings of individual chutes (clothes line method).

    Spiders on hops

I have been noticing quite a bit of spiders on my first year Williamette plant here lately. I'm just letting them go hoping they will eat some pests that want to chow down on some leaves. Is it ok to let them chill on the plant and make webs here and there? I don't see any short term damage by...

strong sulfur smell with Wyeast 1010 American Wheat

This is my first time brewing a wheat beer and I used Wyeast 1010 and its a very vigorous strain! I had some krausen come out of my airlock this morning and out of 20 plus batches, that has never happened before. Also, is there supposed to be a sulfur smell? I didn't know if it was typical of...

First year hops not getting enough sunlight

I planted 2 Willamette rhizomes mid April at the base of my clothes line so I cld train the bines horizontally. The leaves weren't on any trees yet, so the mound was in the sun all day. Now that there are leaves on the tree near my mound, its only getting about 3-4 hours of sunlight a day. :/...

To cover or not to cover?

The forecast here in southern Indiana is showing some rain for the next week or so. We got 2 inches already today and I'm wondering if I shld cover my hop mound? My mound is about 6in high and a foot deep with organic top soil and its somewhat sandy and is covered with some wood landscaping...

    what temp for lager starter?

What temp should I make my 2L yeast starter? I'm using Wyeast California Lager yeast. Do I make it 1-2 days before I pitch? I've only made ale yeast starters before and I didn't know if the time and temps were the same.

    Wyeast California Lager temps

I just got a kit with some Cali Lager yeast but I usually ferment at 68 degrees. That is on the highest range for the yeast and is that ok to roll with? I have my spare bedroom all blocked off from heat and I have a steady 60 deg with the cold weather we have now. I don't want it to warm up...

blow off tube or 3 piece airlock?

I had a mess recently with this batch of oatmeal stout and had to run a blow off tube from my fermenter. Now that primary fermentation has settled down, shld I leave the tube on or put my sanatized airlock on it? I'm using a 6.5 gal glass carboy with universal bung.

    Blow off tube help

I brewed up a 5 gal batch of AG Oatmeal Stout and my primary 8gal bucket was tied up and used my 6.5gal glass carboy. My 3 piece airlock was on my bucket fementer and I just used my S style airlock. I came home from work to find my airlock and bung on the floor and had a nice mess. I made an...
