Snow ESB - 100% pure snow.

So the Army moved me to upstate NY, to be a part of wonderful Fort Drum. I don't exactly relish the situation. Primarily because I'm invested in a 100 different out door hobbies and this place is under several feet of snow and sub freezing temperatures for the better part of a year. One...

Just relocated to Fort Drum/Watertown NY.

So I've been a member for a few years now, but out in Washington State. The Army had other intentions for me and now I'm getting settled outside of Fort Drum and Watertown NY. Not sure how many home brewers are in the area of if theres even a LHBS is the area. I'm pretty sure that I'll have...

Little animals drown in their own poop for you.

I saw this Cracked parody posted today. If beer commercials were honest. Unfortunately it perpetuates the myth that beer kills brain cells, but it's witty regardless. http://www.cracked.com/video_18663_if-beer-ads-were-forced-to-be-honest.html

Drink PBR and stimulate the economy, ya A hole.

Beer experts prefer ales, says this study.

I saw this study posted today. I can't explain to others why I like it so much. A Stanford study published shows the favorite beers of people studied in relation to their level of beer education. http://www.businessinsider.com/stanford-expert-versus-beginner-study-beers-2013-9

The right beer for every football team

I saw this story today and reposted it my Counter Insurgency Brewing FB page before I actually read it. I finally read it and it's entertaining and slightly sarcastic, which means I like it. Examples: Bud for the Cowboys, because they've lost all their quality, and PBR for the Jaguars...

    Shabak Chair Pale Ale

I saw someone's Red Chair NWPA clone recipe and decided to try it. After arriving at the LHBS and chatting with the proprietor we agreed that the recipe was a little off. So on the fly I made a few changes. I deleted the Carared and bumped up the pilsner from the original post since .5 pounds...

    Ridiculous Natty Lite ad.

This just came up while I was trying to look at something on youtube. I think it's funny, but seriously? Natty Lite? hahaha

    Billy Beer

I was up in Anacortes Washington yesterday since no one in Washington can do the speed limit. I ended up missing the ferry out by 10 minutes and was stuck in Anacortes for 4 hours waiting for the next one. I stopped in an antique store to look around and hopefully to kill time. It feels weird...

    Loss of a home brewer.

SGT Billings is someone that I didn't have the pleasure to meet, but deployed with my battalion to one of the worst parts of Afghanistan with me in December 2011. My team and I got sent home early in October 2012 and SGT Billings was killed about a week later, after our battalion was moved to a...

    IPA Mustard

Has anyone tried making a mustard with a beer? I got a recipe that Flying Dog posted. I just started it and was wondering what I could expect. 1/2 cup 50/50 dark mustard, light mustard. 2 TBS distilled vinegar 12oz IPA. Let soak for 24-48 hours, then run through a blender or food...

    IPA Barbecue sauce.

I saw this in Beer Magazine, while I was in Afghanistan. I haven't had a chance to try it yet. I have it posted on the following link as well. Easier to share this way for some people: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Counter-Insurgency-Brewing/145906592241045?ref=stream From Beer Magazine...

    Frozen propane line?

I just started my boil and the 32 jet burner was acting weird and surging, so I decided to slide the keggle over my 24 jet mash burner. As it is, I need to replace the 32 with a 24 as it's way too big. So I shut the valve to the 32 and lit the 24. BUT the 32 kept burning with gentle flames...

    Fresh Hopping?

I was reading through a beer magazine I found and saw a picture if a brew master sitting at his bar showing off his "Fresh Hopped" beer. The practice is basically pouring your beer into a french press and tossing on a handful of hops. Then obviously pressing/straining and drinking. I looked...

Could I ferment in this? Possibly as a secondary?

I have a 4 carboys full and bubbling away at the moment, which is all of them. The issue I have is that I have a cream ale about half way through primary and I want to rack that to secondary when the time is right, and reuse that yeast cake for a double IPA that I already have all the grain...

    Grain pumping to boil kettle?

I don't know if this is normal or I have a problem with my mash tun setup. I seem to be getting what seems like a lot of grain exiting the mash and pumping to the boil kettle. Today I put a sieve in to catch it. Is this normal?

Anyone try the Raspberry Basil Porter? This weeks AHA recipe.

Has anyone tried to make the AHA recipe of the week for the Raspberry Basil Porter aged with Palo Santo wood? I made it this morning but pretty sure I jacked it up. I choked off the recirculation of the mash too much and didn't notice the flow stopped, cutting off flow to the thermocouples...

    Speedy finish

I'm in a unique position right now. I'm currently deployed to Afghanistan and came to realize that I love beer and am tired to putting off my goal of home brewing. So, I sort of went overboard these last few weeks and ordered EVERYTHING that I need to build a Brutus 10 style rig within days of...
